Book Description

"...one of the funniest books I have ever read..."
"...made me laugh so much people were beginning to stare..."
"...incredibly hard to put down..."

There comes a time in every man's life when he says to himself, "Holy Sh*t! I'm about to be eaten by a bear!"

Tony James Slater went to Ecuador, determined to become a man.
It never occurred to him that 'or die trying' might be an option...

The trouble with volunteering in a South American animal refuge is that everything wants a piece of you. And the trouble with being Tony, is that most of them got one.

Just how do you 'look after' something that's trying its damnedest to kill you and eat you?
And how do you find love when you a) don't speak the language, and b) are constantly covered in excrement and entrails?

If only he'd had some relevant experience. Other than owning a pet rabbit when he was nine. And if only he'd bought some travel insurance...

That Bear Ate My Pants is the hilarious tale of one man's quest to better himself. Whether losing a machete fight with a tree, picking dead tarantulas out of a tank of live ones or sewing the head back on to a partially decapitated crocodile, Tony's misadventures are ridiculous, unbelievable and always entertaining.

Long before Sky One got involved, there were already plenty of Idiots Abroad. This is the story of one of them...

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I laughed all through the book until the end, where I became sad to have to say goodbye. I enjoyed myself that much." - Night Owl Reviews

"The narrative in That Bear Ate My Pants was not only well-written and entertaining but downright hilarious. I have not laughed so hard while reading in quite a while. And when I mean laugh, I mean I laughed so hard I was screaming. Warning, do not read this book while on the toilet." - Indie Eclective

"Tony Slater is very gifted at writing comically and laughter accompanied every page I read at the account of his daily routine looking after animals, birds and reptiles of all shapes and sizes and degrees of ferocity.  Despite the tomfoolery of the writing, Tony never forgets the seriousness of the work carried out by the rescue centre, he never forgets to inform us of the beauty and uniqueness of Ecuador, and more importantly, never forgets to reveal not only how much the animals came to mean to him in the short time he was there, but also how much the whole experience touched him.
This is one I will read again if I ever need cheering up.  It's a guaranteed tonic." - Kath 'n' Kindle Book Reviews

About the Author

Tony James Slater is a very, very strange man. He believes himself to be indestructible, despite considerable evidence to the contrary. He is often to be found making strange faces whilst pretending to be attacked by inanimate objects. And sometimes - not always, but often enough to be of concern - his testicles hang out of the holes in his trousers.
It is for this reason (amongst others) that he chooses to spend his life far from mainstream civilization, tackling ridiculous challenges and subjecting himself to constant danger. He gets hurt quite a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Totally Satisfying Read July 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I was reading the beginning chapters of this book, I had to stop uncountable times to laugh. As I got deeper into this true story, though, I found myself increasingly moved by the author's love for the wild animals in his care. To say he risked life and limb to help him is merely a statement of fact, and his heartbreak when one died or suffered was expressed in a touching, yet non-sentimental way.

To read this book is to take the most comfortable kind of vacation. You'll feel as if you're there, except that you won't be slogging through swamps, roasting in the mid-day sun, or freezing when that sun goes down. Ecuador sounds like a beautiful country that I have no plans to visit.

I so hope the author is working on another book. I will be looking for it. Lucky you, all the fun awaits you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Entertaining Read...... July 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
"That Bear Ate My Pants" is a throroughly entertaining read - once I started it I found it almost impossible to put it down! There are comedy moments a-plenty, one or two extremely touching moments and lots of interesting stories that give the reader an excellent view into what it would be like to volunteer in an animal rescue sanctuary in South America....by the end of the book I found myself bemoaning the fact that I had never taken the opportunity to do anything like this and wondering whether or not I'm too old to try now (which I am).

Alongside the "memoiresque" account of experiences volunteering the book also gives the reader an insight into South America itself, the people, the forests, the beaches.....and of course the amazing work done by animal protection agencies - who mostly seem to be volunteers.

Most of all I was captivated by the stories about the various animals that arrived at the sanctuary, their characters and behaviours as well as back stories were fascinating, and sometimes sad, but mostly they have happy endings as the staff at Santa Martha look after them with such devotion and some of them even get released back into the wild (one of my favourite chapters).

Definitely worth reading, maybe it will inspire you to go out and have a similarly life changing experience.....all I can say is I really want a wooden parrot...

5.0 out of 5 stars Freaking hilarious! October 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Halfway through this book, my boyfriend (over breakfast) looks at me as I've laughed for the fifth time during the meal and says, "I've never seen you laugh so much at a book."

Yeah. It's that damn funny.

I lurrrve travel writing; if I were to pick a favorite genre, it would definitely be books like this. I loved living (and volunteering) vicariously through this author's narrative. This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it - especially if you need a laugh!
