4.0 out of 5 stars Panzer Command: Operation Winter Storm
I love the game, very different feel from many other tachtical level wargames. I like the fact that you set strategy and tactics, but don't have to fire every individual weapon unless you choose to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Combat Mission series
Combat Mission Afrika Korps is a much older--and better--game. If you need to own every decent wargame ever published and can find it for $20 or less, than it's a good buy. Compared to the CM Series, this game and the previous one is a bit clunky and buggy.

What does set it apart from CM is that you can go into the text files and pretty much change any weapon...

What does set it apart from CM is that you can go into the text files and pretty much change any weapon system right down to the caliber, range and hitting power of a tank's 2nd machine gun. So if you enjoy that sort of thing, you'll ignore the game's other weaknesses.

This is kind of like panzer general 2 and panzer general 3 except you cant control when the planes attack or where they attack. But still a pretty fun older game.

When I bought this game, I was expecting something similar to Panzer General, as some reviews did say it was similar. I don't feel it was really very similar at all, and certainly no where as much fun as Panzer General I & II were to play. I suppose this game is more realistic, in that the battle field is much tougher, as enemies can spot you, and you can't often spot them until fired upon. There is no fog of war concept in this game like in the PG series. That is, all the map is exposed, and that in itself is frustrating, because you, as the "general" can often see the enemy, because ONE of your troops has spotted them, but none of the other troops can fire on most of the map, simply because they can't target at random, nor can they shoot at stuff they don't see (and, they can't see a LOT because terrain is often in the way). Yes, that's realistic, and if you like that, then this game is for you. The air support in this game is effectively random, and you cannot control the planes at all. That was a big disappointment for me, as you can't use them as spotters, and you can't use them for deep strikes. You have NO IDEA where, or even when, the planes will strike. Artillery is sort of a waste of time for much of what I've seen so far. First your troops have to set up, then they lay down a random barrage. If something happens to be in the area being barraged, then it might get hit. Often, all you're really doing is blowing holes in empty fields. So for me, fun is 1 star at best, but to credit the realism aspect, I have to give it 2 stars, even though that's not why I bought it. I would also like to point out that the colors are very disappointing. It is winter, so you don't expect to see a lot of color, but there should be green firs and pines, and the units could be more colorful too. Everything is almost like looking at an old World War I footage in black and white. Moving around on the map is not very intuitive, but I suppose you can get used to it eventually.
