Another great World War II game from SSI, Panzer Commander drops you into the cupola of a battle tank. This excellent guide offers tips and strategies for all of the game's 40 missions and six campaigns. You'll start out with a primer on basic tank controls, components, and handling. (Just which part is the cupola, anyway?) Key terms and concepts, like the all-important hull-down position, are well documented and easy to understand. Also, the capabilities and specifications for each of the game's 48 drivable tanks are clearly listed in a series of lengthy tables. For more specific information on a given tank, you can check out the author's tips for taking each one into battle. The book also provides some great tactical advice for each scenario, complete with maps and screen shots to help you familiarize yourself with the battlefield at hand. You'll learn all about the game's excellent multiplayer mode, the powerful mission editor. I found this a bit of a disappointment after the quality of the Sybex Airwarrior II guide. Although there are some useful tips (especially modifying the open file system), it could have been a lot better.

Except for charts showing, off-road speeds, turret traverse speeds ans a scenario creation guide, this book tells nothing that a cursory glance at the manual and 15 minutes playing the game won't tell you. A severe disappointment is the lack of in-depth descriptions of campaign scenarios. Anyone with even a slight knowledge of WW II armor warfare will want to pass this by.
