5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun
I've come straight to this game from the original Panzer General, on the original Playstation. I loved it then, and love this newer version of the game. The main appeal of this game is it is easy to learn and fun to play, and doesn't take months to complete one scenario (although the campaign games may, if you have a life outside of the computer). The units, while...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for another sequel that improves on this one, December 13, 1999

The graphics in this game are kind of a mixed blessing. The ability to see a unit from any angle, and the animations when they move and attack are great advancements in this series. However , the terrain and cities look amazingly flat for a 3-d environment. Much improvement is needed here.

As far as the gameplay, the difficulty rating is adjustable as in previous Panzer games, so it's as tough as you want it to be. I was not happy to see the prestige points system scrapped for the available slots system. With Panzer General 2, towards the end of a campaign, you could assemble a legion of infantry and tanks to smother your opposition. The accumulation of units in this game is much more modest.

I didn't have problems with getting the game to work (RIVA TNT card, 500 mhz, 128 MB RAM). But the game is sort of buggy. I had an ambush set up for the German forces in the Patton campaign. It completely destroys the German unit, after which every time the game throws me back to Windows. I was not happy with that (although PG 2 did this sometimes also). The game is fun, but until the 3-d environment and gameplay are improved, I still prefer Panzer General 2.

1.0 out of 5 stars less of the same, December 27, 1999

This is basically the same game, with the not-too-thrilling advance of seeing your pieces rumble (slowly)about in 3-D. This version tends to keep your army smaller adjusting for this fact by allowing each piece multiple moves. While I'm pleased with the realistic touch of being able to move troops in a vehicle and have them get out of the vehicle in the same turn I am deeply dissapointed that I can no longer amass a large force. General army size seems to be about twelve pieces. My "airforce" consists of two bombers and a fighter! This is still enough like PG2 to be playable, but unless you're some rabid fan I'd give it a pass.

I've come straight to this game from the original Panzer General, on the original Playstation. I loved it then, and love this newer version of the game. The main appeal of this game is it is easy to learn and fun to play, and doesn't take months to complete one scenario (although the campaign games may, if you have a life outside of the computer). The units, while toy-Axis-&-Allies-like, are still fun to watch. It's pretty cool to watch a German tank rumble cross-country on the advance. The only complaint I have about this game is that it is sometimes difficult to find units in cities. A highlight feature that "lights up" a unit in a city when the mouse cursor touches it would have been helpful. However, this is a very small complaint, since once you forget about a unit in a city, it's the last time and you learn what to look for to see your troops. I've been wargaming, board and computer, for near twenty years now, and I think this title has appeal for newbies and veterans alike. Buy it if you like turn-based wargames.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, not that challenging, December 4, 1999

I have played all the Panzer General games and have been playing SSI games for a long time. I found the graphics excellent (I am using Voodoo3). I found the game to be too easy to beat. I have had major victories in every scenario I have tried to date and I am currently blowing away a campaign. I am concerned gameplay has suffered so we can have better graphics. I enjoy the game, love the interface, love the fact the commanders have names, and enjoy the background info but I love the challenges of the earlier games. I play Panzer General II more often.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Wargame for Beginners, November 3, 2000
This review is from: Panzer General 3D Assault (CD-ROM)
This game is very accessible to people who are new to wargames.

I'm a hardcore FPS gamer (Quake 3, UT) and have only played one other wargame (Panzer General 2, which I really liked, even though I didn't know what the heck I was doing).

I like the "improvements" in PG3DA, and SSI has made it very easy for beginners to jump right into scenarios or campaigns. If you've never played a wargame, this is the game you should check out.

I liked it so much, I bought PG3: Scorched Earth.

PG3 would suggest an improvement over PG2 yet since there is no Play-By-Email (PBEM) option to PG3, the game is only as challenging as the AI is smart, which isn't saying much. Mindscape would have better served their loyal customers by selling a patch to fix the extensive bugs in the far superior PG2. Keep trying, Mindscape, because for some nutty reason I still want to keep buying......

Some improvements in the special performance of combat units, however I have recently obtained a Pentium 111, 450 Mhz 128 mg Ram with a Viper 550 video card and could not get the game to work properly even with the latest drivers, etc. It did work on another machine with a 32 mb Video Card. I would not recommend this game because of its failure to support a well known video card.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'd love it if it worked....., July 20, 2004
This review is from: Panzer General 3D Assault (CD-ROM)
If I could get this game to work on either of my two systems, then I thik that I'd love it. The graphics are clean and easy to watch. But the game stops in mid scenario on my XP machine (did not think it would work perfectly there, since it's not rated for XP), but I cannot even get into the game on my W98 laptop, I can assign the commanders to the units, but then cannot get to the game map to play the game.

Well, I still have that old W95 machine that I have not used in a while. It might just be worth it to try it there.....
