4.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST PERFECT, December 29, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Panzer General 3D (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
This game is lots of fun. It's superior than Panzer General 2 because your units, especially the higher level ones, can perform so much more actions per round. It is also much improved in graphics. It's got some problems though.

Higher level units can cost up to 3 slots each. This results in ridiculous battles where I would have approximately 10 combat units trying to defeat 30-50 enemy units! I still beat the game, but since this is a war sim, I have to say it wasn't that often that these kinds of odds were the rule in WW2. Fortunately, this severe flaw was fixed in PG3D Scorched Earth. All units in that game cost only 1 slot regardless of level.

Another significant problem in 3D Assault is that without the patch, ambushing the AI's units causes a crash to the desktop. The same is not true if you were the one ambushed.

A problem that also existed in all previous PG games is that there are no defensive missions, only offensive ones. There were several important defensive battles like Tobruk, Anzio, Carentan, and most importantly, Bastogne.

A strange problem that was never fixed are the lines of resistance problems. I have lost battles because AI units spawned off the map and overran my starting point.

Despite all these little problems, this is still an excellent, exciting game. It looks better than all previous turned based war sims.

This review is from: Panzer General 3D (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Yes, sorry to say it. This game worked and played fine on my older Intel 2.8 system but had some serious issues (mainly video) with my latest AMD dual-core. I have had similar problems with many of my older games and my only explanation is the high-end graphics cards used these days. Perhaps we are getting too much video for these games? I don't know. However, I enjoyed many hours of game play with this one and was pleased with my purchase of it.
