Book Description

The Panzer IV was the only German tank to stay in production throughout the war. It was the backbone of the Panzer force and was deployed on every front. Due to its efficient armament, robust armour and outstanding reliability, it was preferred by crews over the Panther, Tiger and King Tiger.
This comprehensive overview of the Panzer IV in action was compiled by Emmy Award winning historian Bob Carruthers. It draws heavily on war-time intelligence reports to produce a fascinating insight into the development and combat history of the Panzer IV at the tactical and operational level.
Also featured are rare photographs and illustrations which provide an absorbing study, from an array of primary sources, of the world of the Panzer IV and its crews, which conveys to the modern reader a vivid sense of how they were viewed at the time.
This book is part of the 'Hitler's War Machine' series, a new military history range compiled and edited by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. The series draws on primary sources and contemporary documents to provide a new insight into the true nature of Hitler's Wehrmacht. The series consultant is David Mcwhinnie creator of the award winning PBS series 'Battlefield'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brief but Informative January 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is short, as the entire production and combat records of the Pz. IV could take volumes. However, it is a great concise work about the history of the tank. The featured Allied Tech and a Trend Reports that a featured throughout are unique and worth the price admission alone. There are not a lot of pictures but the ones that are included are not the ones that are commonly seen of the Pz. IV. All in all a fun but short little book.

This is a good basic reference book. Gives you the an idea of what the Allies and the Germans were thinking in regards to armored warfare. A nice starting point for in depth research.

4.0 out of 5 stars The major German tank April 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Panzer IV was intended as a "heavy" tank to back up the Panzer III "medium". In the event it didn't work out that way. The Pz IV was a better platform and became the workhorse for the German army. Not only as a tank, but as the basis for a host of self-propelled guns, tank destroyers, and other vehicles. It was repeatedly upgunned and uparmored to meet the challenges of ever-more-potent enemy tanks. Even in its most developed form it wasn't a match for the Russian T-34, but as a tank it played a significant role in the German armored force up to the end of the war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Info-packed! March 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A some-what "just the facts, ma'am" approach along with some good anecdotal material takes this book (and others in the series) beyond the dry specifications and statistics. This volume relates the history of the development of the vehicle rather than the tendency of many to delve into the politics of procurement as practiced by the Nazi regime. The use of original material from the Allied side was a nice touch and isn't over-done. All in all, a fine book. Two minor negatives: the book is a bit haphazard in its layout and there are editorial issues (misspellings, etc.) but it still tends to flow well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book on the development of the Pz. IV June 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book does a very good job on the evolution of the Pz. IV from its beginning to the end of the war. After reading the book, I have to agree that the German Army could of stopped or slowed down the Russian steamroller after the Battle Of Kursk if German manufacturing would of concentrated on the Pz. IV instead of wasting time on the Panther and Tiger tanks that were so expensive and time-wasting to build and maintain.
