Book Description

Armor at War 7000 S. August 1, 1998
72 pages, 171 photos and 16 color plates. Bound to be another big hit, this late war German armor book is again loaded with many never-before-published photos, like the rest of this popular series. Robert Michulec went through many East European archives and private collections to gather photos for this book. The artwork of A. Wrobel is well illustrated in the 16 color plates enclosed. A Polish artist, Wrobel is one of the premier artists in armor profiles. This book picks up where volume 1 finishes, that is, right after the Battle of Kurak. Operation Zitadelle marked the end of the German major offensives on the Eastern Front, and saw the German armies on full-scale retreat. This book follows the Panzers as they fought their way during their retreat towards the west. Not too many photos were taken on the German armies from late 1943 onward, so the 171 late war photos in this book are valuable to modelers and historians alike. 1943 saw the Germans introduced many new armored fighting vehicles to the battleground, and this book includes photos of many such different vehicles in its pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictorial of early Wehrmacht armored combat., July 17, 1999
By A Customer
If you are looking for a thorough, concise, pictorial of early German armor in action, then pick up this book. Many excellent photos from the Barbarossa campaign through the first two Russian winters. In fact, the book contains many, many winter photos providing modelers with a wealth of ideas for unique weathering and dioramas. Being a study of the Eastern front, there are plenty of shots of captured and knocked out Russian tanks in this book too. I recommend this book to enthusiasts of WWII German armor, and armor model builders in particular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Photo-Guide to German Panzers on the Russian Front!, March 6, 2009
This review is from: Panzers in the East (Armor at War 7000 S.) (v. 2) (Paperback)
PANZERS IN THE EAST, DECLINE AND DEFEAT 1943-1945 is another top-knotch photo-guide in Robert Michulec's wonderful "Armor at War" series. Chock full of never-before-seen photos and color profiles, it's a visual treasure trove for anyone interested in Germany's WWII "heavy metal" and/or the Eastern Front.

After a one-page summary of Eastern Front events circa 1943-45, Michulec provides 71 pages of well-captioned candids of Tigers, Panthers, Hummels, Marders, StuGs, prime movers, Schwimmwagens, Nashorns, odd-ball AFVs, tank crews and commanders, destroyed/captured Russsian AFVs, etc. along with eight pages of color profiles by Wrobel and Klonski.

Long out of print, Michulec's book is a pricey item on the secondary market. It's a shame all of the "Armor at War" series couldn't be reprinted in less expensive editions.

Be that as it may, PANZERS IN THE EAST, DECLINE AND DEFEAT 1943-1945 is one super photo guide to German AFVs. Highly recommended.
