Format: Hardcover

The book is divided into 2 sections: Albania (1999) and Kosovo (2000). By my quick count, there are 59 black + white photos, all horizontal format, 14 x 9.25 inches, spread across two pages. The book lays flat and the gutter does not really detract from the images. For such a modestly-sized book the photos are actually quite large.

There are brief (but very welcome) captions for all images and extended notes for a few. There's a "Chronology of War," 1389-2002, which helps expand the context a small bit, and an informative introduction running, well, let's call it 4 pages.

The book's design is elegant, the printing is very rich - and dark - on heavy paper, the binding is adequate.

Nearly every person appearing in these photos is in pain, mental or physical. Pellegrin's camera often looks away from them (or at them indirectly), perhaps forcing us to push our attention around the frame. He undermines photography's omnivorous appetite for detail with motion blur (subject and camera), empty shadows, and obscuring reflections. It's all very fatiguing but very effective.

These pictures might best function as illustrations or visual counterpoint for the written histories of the period. They greatly deepen one's emotional understanding rather than meet the more traditional photojournalistic role of providing documentary evidence through accumulation of detail. This is a difficult book to spend extended time with, but that the Kosovars' pain should become our pain seems appropriate.

Kosovo 1999-2000 is a very powerful book whose underlying theme and its implied lessons could be applied to any modern conflict, where civilians bear the greatest weight and consequence of the combatants' actions.

Paolo Pellegrin is an amazing photographer and this is an extraordinary photo book.
The story of Kosovo is a tough one and Paolo's approach is personal and truthful to his experience.
No space for quaintness or cheap sentimentalism here, but a realistic and uncompromising document of extremely hard times for simple people.
