Madonna: The Sticky & Sweet Tour Trailer

Biography

In the 80s Madonna achieved notoriety for her flagrant sexuality, which saw some tag her as a soft-porn star who happened to sing. She deliberately courted controversy to stay in the limelight, but her songs were so memorable that she would've been a star anyway, and her ever-changing persona has kept her at the top ever since.

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, better known as Madonna, has been many… Read more in Amazon's Madonna Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The remix is amazing!, January 6, 2000
This review is from: Papa Don't Preach / Ain't No Big Deal (Audio CD)
The CD-Single "Papa Don't Preach" is worth its purchase price for two reasons, the first being "Ain't No Big Deal", one of Madonna's first songs and a solid, if unpolished, tune. The big reason, however, is the extended remix of "Papa Don't Preach", which is vastly superior to the original. The remix has a longer intro and longer closing, but most importantly, some really cool vocal effects. This remix is solely responsible for the fact that "Papa Don't Preach" has become one of my favorite Madonna songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madonna I want to go, June 9, 2008

Roberta Hotard "Mrs. H" (Somewhere here, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Papa Don't Preach / Ain't No Big Deal (Audio CD)
Madonna is going to my former hometown in November and I have to see that concert. I never made it to see her ever performing all of those hits. It just didnt work out. I have many favorites of Madonnas songs since I was raised on her music but a few are: Like A Prayer, Lucky Star, Like A Virgin and Papa Dont Preach. Papa Dont Preach hit me pretty hard in Life, I thought my dad was going to be pretty tough on me, little did I know at 18 years old he took his warm loving heart and arms and put them around me and told me he loved me, Youll always be my baby. In 2007 before he passed away on Valentines Day 2/14/07 he told me that I was a good kid and a good mother to my daughters. SO now I just need to get a hold of my daughter so I can go see Madonna and of course get a plane ticket. Madonna woke me up in the world about life. So dont miss the Sticky and Sweet tour . Thanks dad for everything. Im still a material girl at heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Classic In Every Sense Of The Word, April 25, 2003
By
Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Papa Don't Preach / Ain't No Big Deal (Audio CD)
Papa Don't Preach was the second single to be released from Madonna's massively successful third album, True Blue. The album went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide and produced Madonna's most mature and enjoyable music to date. Madonna had already proved with Live To Tell (the first single from this third album) that she could make excellent and mature music. She proved this even further when she released Papa Don't Preach. It went straight to No.1 in the UK in June 1986 and spent 14 weeks on the chart. It was also a US No.1, and her first single of five to reach No.1 in both the UK and US.

Papa Don't Preach opens with a superb violin arrangement, before breaking out with a classic beat. The drums are ever present, but the violins add that distressed feeling to the song, which is perfect for what the song's subject is about. Madonna then begins the first verse with, "Papa I know you are going to be upset, 'cos I was always your little girl, but you should know by now, I'm not a baby." The song is about an accidental teenage pregnancy that worries Madonna deeply. She dreads the day that she has to tell her father, who is against her even seeing the man who has got her pregnant. Madonna then sings a fantastic bridge before she moves into the epic chorus with the lyrics, "Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep. Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep, but I made up my mind - I'm keeping my baby, I'm gonna keep my baby!" Madonna then carries on singing her second verse, bridge and chorus, all while under the dramatic influence of the violin. The song then breaks into a glorious solo with just the violin. The song then starts up again with the lyrics, "Daddy, daddy if you could only see, just how good he's been treating me, you'd give us our blessing right now, 'cos we are in love...we are in love!" And from there on, the song continues with the fabulous choruses and Madonna's ever-determined effort to make her father see the positive side that she's pregnant.

The video to Papa Don't Preach is excellent. Madonna dances around in a black room with an awful boob-tube costume on and dreadful bleached hair. In other scenes, she gets to test out her acting skills by hanging with her boyfriend and friends, before going home to tell her father about her situation. The video finally ends with her father giving his approval of her pregnancy. Overall, Papa Don't Preach is a true Madonna classic that deserves all the success it received. Madonna's vocals are on top form as she belts out her emotions to her father - something that would've been unthinkable a year previously.
