Editorial Reviews

The first album recorded by Papa John Creach released by JEFFERSON AIRPLANE S own Grunt Record label in 1971, Papa John although considerably older than the other member s of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE joined the band towards the later years of it s existence. The violin player soon became a great favourite among fans and judging by the support he receives on this album amongst fellow musicians. Guesting on this disc are JERRY GARCIA and CARLOS SANTANA with fellow Airplane members JORMA KAUKONEN, JACK CASADY, GRACE SLICK and QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE legend John Cipollina.

I saw Jefferson Airplane in Cleveland, Ohio in the early 70's. I wondered who that old man with the fiddle was, and what in the world he was doing on stage. Grace Slick came across as obnoxious and insulting, possibly drunk and/or high like many of the musiclovers present, but Papa John was sublime. He was as good as Grace was bad. I bought but have long since lost the album for sale here, and it is terrific, although it may not be Airplane fans' cup of tea. Some time ago I saw Grace on television telling an interviewer that she was not interested in any kind of Airplane reunion tour because "there's nothing as pitiful as a bunch of old people on stage trying to do rock and roll." Have to agree after some of the geezer tours that have come along, but she surely wasn't thinking of the old coot who took the pitiful out of her show and made it rock like it was 1972.

The powers that be need to release this. This is such a fantastic record, it has of all of my favorite Bay area band members contributing to the brilliance of papa John Creach. Funky, fun and downright bad ass.
