My first reaction to this book was that it looks like it is a bound version of a typed doctoral dissertation. It looks more like a manuscript than a professionally published book. But looks can be deceiving. I found Heft's book an excellent summary of the issues surrounding the argument between Pope John XXII and the Franciscans over apostolic poverty and papal infallibility. This is not a lightweight topic, and the footnotes show that Heft did some serious research. If this really was Heft's dissertation, then he definitely earned his doctorate. Students of this issue would do well to read Heft's analysis.
