4.0 out of 5 stars A small gem of yiddish poetry in translation, July 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Paper Bridges: Selected Poems of Kadya Molodowsky (English and Yiddish Edition) (Paperback)
Known mostly for her chidren's poems, Molodowsky was also editor for more than 30 years of a Yiddish magazine in New York, named Surroundings. Among the poems in this collection is the memorable "Merciful God," written after World War II where she laments the pain and price of the "chosen people" who have no more left to give. She ends "And do us one more favor: Merciful God, deprive us of the Divine presence of genius."

A niche book of poetry, but a fine one that is very accessible to readers, particularly women.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice of the Jewish people, May 2, 2007
Kadya Molodowsky contributed for over half a century her part in that 'Paper Bridge' she hoped would be the redemption of the Jewish people. In Kiev in Warsaw in New York and in Eretz Yisrael she wrote a poetry which at one stage focused on the poor and homeless of the Jewish people,at another on the woman's role in traditional Judaism, and still later on their situation in the wake of the 'Shoah'. Her most famous poem admirably translated here by Kathryn Hellerstein " Lord of Mercy" is a fierce ironic indictment of the special Jewish fate, a complaint and plea to G-d to stop choosing the Jews if this means their being chosen for extraordinary persecution and suffering.
