Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

There seems to be no holiday that the Paper Craft Fun for Holidays series can’t match with some cunning use of toilet-paper rolls, aluminum foil, and glitter glue. McGee begins this volume with a nice two-page summary on the origins of Fat Tuesday before diving into the eight crafts, which, as always, range from the super simple to the tantrum inducing. The best of them look challenging but sure to please, with some unique mechanics to boot, such as the paper-bead “throw” necklace, the gold-doubloon necklace, and the Columbina mask. The descriptions are not always crystal clear, but the photos are helpful. As a bonus, the finished projects are consistently humble, which will lower the frustration factor of newbie crafters. Each craft comes complete with a paragraph establishing a historical context and a list of materials needed. A back section of tracing patterns will help tremendously, though the cue to “enlarge 125%” probably indicates that a larger trim size would have been ideal. Grades 2-4. --Daniel Kraus --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Format: Paperback
Paper Crafts for Mardi Gras by Randel McGee
ISBN#978-1-59845-334-8. Enslow Publishers, Inc provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to review. Whether you are an educator, home schooler or parent looking for art projects this is a wonderful craft book with plenty of colorful pictures, list of materials needed, and detailed step-by-step instructions for each craft. You are also using items that can be found around your house so the cost factor is minimal. The author has a brief 2-page introduction of Mardi Gras, a nice touch so that you will know about the significance of the crafts other than something to do. What is even better is each craft has its own brief paragraph of its significance to Mardi Gras. The back of the book contains templates that are needed to create the crafts along with 2 pages devoted to books & Internet resources. The only down side to the book is that Author's Note on the Contents page, which contains some important information for you to know prior to beginning the crafts, is small & you may miss it if you don't read the entire contents page. Another worthwhile book in the Paper Craft Fun for Holiday series: Paper Crafts for Easter (Paper Craft Fun for Holidays)
