Well, yes, as a previous reviewer complained I did find 3 patterns with chickens; but what do you expect from a farmyard pattern? And with 42 patterns in the book I don't fault them for that, and I don't even care for chickens. What I did find was a great book with a variety of patterns large enough to get your scissors into.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Decorators and Non-Artists
I am an artist who got this book thinking to learn something new. However, I was so turned off by this art form that this book was of no use to me at all. This does not mean this book is not for someone else. However, for me creativity does NOT entail the rigid cutting out of forms in one color and then placing that form on a backdrop of another color.

And don't forget to unfold the large-format patterns. Some of them are that long. And guess what, galleylama? When I opened the pattern of Two Herons, on the inside of the fold was the Dragon pattern you so longed for. And unfolding the Persian Cypresses pattern revealed the matching dragon! I hope you didn't return the book before discovering those.

Hint to readers: When you are turning the pages and some of them feel a bit thicker than the rest, there's a reason for that. You are feeling the fold of a long pattern, and there is one on each side of the page. Now that's what I call getting your money's worth.

This book was even more than I hoped for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely designs, July 5, 2009

I thought this book's designs for paper cutting were lovely. I prefer designs based on nature and found many delightful ones and what I consider to be good variety. The directions might be a bit skimpy for beginners, but readers with a little familiarity with the craft of paper cutting will be in good shape.

This is a fun book with a lot of style, and ideas for cut outs to use in various sizes. They show ideas for decorating walls, lamps, etc., but the patterns would also be good in smaller sizes for cards, etc. I love the patterns. Well drawn.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Decorators and Non-Artists, November 2, 2011

I am an artist who got this book thinking to learn something new. However, I was so turned off by this art form that this book was of no use to me at all. This does not mean this book is not for someone else. If your field is interior decor instead of art, I do think these can make very effective pieces for the home or office. Many people would be capable of creating them too since you are cutting out forms from a pattern. It would be time consuming but you wouldn't need art talent to do it. Plus the raw materials would be cheap.

I personally need a much freer medium, hate patterns and stencils of any sort, and I think my reaction would be common among artists. For interior decorators and non-artists though, there may be real possibilities in this book for them to use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic, September 17, 2008
This review is from: Paper Cutouts (Paperback)
This book is very dissapointing...a very simplistic book. The beautiful dragons on the cover are only featured inside in a tiny picture...nothing to use to make them...if you are into chickens go for it, lots of those
