5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Pencil in the World
I am a woodworker and use pencils constantly for drafting and design as well as for actually marking wood. This pencils are soft enough so you can see the line and the lead won't break, yet hard enough that it holds a point. The wood is premium so it sharpens right the first time. The lead is of course graphite, but I think it has some wax in it so it flows nicely...

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed
This review is of PaperMate model 2254, but these are not the PaperMate brand Black Warrior "Mirado" no. 2 HB pencils from just a couple of years ago. Just like prior models, these newer ones are indeed black and embossed with the maker's name and trade name in gold as before, but the "USA" is conspicuously missing; they now come out of Mexico. Look out for the word...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Pencil in the World, January 6, 2005
This review is from: Paper Mate Mirado Black Warrior Medium Soft Lead Pencils, 12 #2 Pencils (2254) (Office Product)
Chances are, you can't afford a Rolls Royce automobile, a Patek Philippe watch or a mansion in the Hamptons. But for less than a quarter apiece, you can write with the best wooden pencil in the world: the Black Warrior. Who says rich people have all the fun?

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, May 1, 2008
I would just like to say first that I despise pens; most likely because my penmenship is terrible and pens just make it that much worse. I also can't stand mechanical pencils with the constant breaking of the thin, cheap lead or the jamming of lead. I find I spend more time trying to get a mechanical pencil to work then I do writing with it. I just prefer your standard wood pencil which I have recently started to learn is no longer the norm. These days you can't a soul with a wooden pencil and it's even harder to find a pencil sharpeners but I continue on because maybe I'm stubborn. Recently I switched from the Dixon Ticanderoga, which I used to tell everyone was the best pencil in the world, to the Mirado Black Warrior. I have been using the Ticanderoga since way back in high school when my friend and I would argue over who used the better pencils, his Black Warrior or my Ticanderoga. So when I started to experience so defects in my favorite brand of pencil, which I learned was caused by moving manufactoring for the U.S. to Mexico, I knew where to turn. I bought a pack of Black Warriors instead of my beloved Ticanderogas and to tell you the truth I couldn't be happier. They are of the highest quality. If you need pencils, buy these.

These pencils are really good. They have a fearsome name that will strike fear into your math teachers eyes. They have great erasers; they will last forever. I forgot to study for a test, and i got an 87. I have never gotten a bad grade with it. IT RULES!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not blown away, April 29, 2009

The first paragraph of the item description says "lacquer finish"... but the second paragraph says "matte finish". Well, the "matte" part didn't sink in, and based on the pictures and the "lacquer" I expected shiny. (Didn't the Furniture Guys always use lacquer when they wanted to fake a French polish? And aren't those shiny black mirado warriors on Shirley Schmidt's desk on Boston Legal?)

Well, these are fine pencils overall, but they're definitely not shiny. They're also lighter than I expected. When I opened them, my first thought was "balsa wood"?

As the other reviewers have indicated, the lead isn't overly soft, so they are best for writing on harder surfaces. I find the Dixon Ticonderoga to be softer, but several people all over the web are complaining about quality issues. This is a good substitute for the Ticonderoga that doesn't need excessive sharpening. If I had to take a Calculus course again, I'd use the mirados.

An even better substitute for those who want a softer lead would be almost anything from the General Pencil Company, especially their test scoring pencils. I took a chance recently and ordered several dozen different kinds, and am very happy with them all. They do require sharpening more often, but they are perfect for newspaper crosswords and the like.

And if anyone can tell me where to find some shiny mirado warriors, please comment!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pencil, September 11, 2008
This review is from: Paper Mate Mirado Black Warrior Medium Soft Lead Pencils, 12 #2 Pencils (2254) (Office Product)
I have found the results of using this pencil to be highly variable. In the hands of some, the artistry or manuscript that is produced is mediocre at best. But, in the hands of others, true masterpieces have been created. For the price I would suggest that you too should try these pencils and find out what you are capable of! Your results may vary.

Having said that--these are the BEST pencils! I am a freak about writing with sharp pencils, which is annoying because you have to sharpen them all the time! These are smooth, write dark, and stay sharp ten times or more longer than others! Great for puzzle people. I just have to use them for my Sudoku!
