As an engineer, I grew quite fond of these pens over the years. I use them exclusively for redline drawings, note taking, and anything else that I would need to hand write and be able to read down the road. For some reason, these pens make my handwriting significantly neater. I mean, I actually enjoy writing with them. For years and years Paper Mate pens, with the two hearts on the cap, were my go-to pen. They were American made, never leaked, and would last for years. I still have some of my old ones, and they still work. I'm rambling, I know, but I wanted to give a little background.

A few months ago, I went to the supply cabinet at my office to grab a couple of my trusty paper mates. I popped open the box (not a whole lot of people go for the felt tip pens, so I usually open them up) and was very very surprised by what was inside. For as long as I've been around, paper mate pens were glossy colored, smooth, and had half millimeter lines that ran parallel to the shaft of the pen. I used to put my thumbnail in the grooves and spin the pen to make a "ZZZZIPPP" noise. These new pens though... they were not right. They're matte in color, the shaft is bare, with a very cheap quality screen print "Paper Mate" marking on it. I would bet my paycheck that the factory in Mexico where these pens now come from, make pens for 100 different companies. I'm sure they're all the same pen, with the only difference being the screenprinted name on each pen. My old paper mates had a white tip guard, with just the colored tip sticking out about a millimeter. These pens now have a clear tip guard and the tip sticks out about twice as far. I know, big deal right? Well, yes, it is a big deal. Now, if you press too hard, the tip will deform, and the pen will be useless.

Caution! Paper Mate seems to have changed the Flair pen. In my opinion the change is functionally and stylistically for the worse. The pen has an entirely new feel in the hand - again, in my opinion it feels cheaper; and the ink delivery on my first two boxes has been lousy. It's good to see the many comments lauding the "unchanging" iconic Flair pen -I have loved them for 30 years - but I wonder if these commenters are using old stock.

Before my review, I have to say something--I am addicted to finding the perfect pen. Every single time I get to the store (or wherever I am that happens to sell pens), I look and see what new styles have arrived. It is amazing with what they come up with--extra fine, 0.7/0.5/0.2, micro fine, etc.

When it comes to pens, the thicker the ink, the more happy I am writing. I prefer BOLD ink, but good luck trying to find BOLD, as it must not be that popular. The only decent pens that call themselves BOLD come with a high price tag, even for someone that LOVES pens.

The reason why I don't use the Micro/Extra Fine pen is because I have yet to find one that doesn't skip the ink when writing.

When it comes to pen manufacturers, Paper Mate is one of the best. The Flair Medium Black pens are one of my all-time favorites. They have listened to their
customers and came out with the Tip-Guard, which is pretty great because without it the tip can be damaged and basically you end up with a sub-par pen. Honestly, this is a pen for serious pen fanatics and those you care what their writing looks like.

PROS: 1. Won't bleed through paper to the next page 2. Smooth writing with no skips or stops 3. Writing will look professional 4. Even works great with
art projects 5. Not some cheaply made marker 6. Fluidity of Ink never disappoints 7. Felt tip is comfortable to write with
CONS: 1. Don't leave them in the heat, ink starts to skip (but I live in the desert HA HA)

If you are looking for a high-quality pen or a great writer, then the Paper Mate Flair is for you.

This is my go-to pen for both work and personal use. Most of the colors are bold enough to be easily read, with the exception of the yellow. The ink rarely bleeds through and never smudges on me. For grading papers and recording grades in the small spaces of a grade book, these pens are by far the best I've ever seen (and I've tried a LOT). The caps snap on securely, and the metal slide clip keeps the pen attached to most book covers. Even the light green and pink colors are easy to read, and I like to switch colors every column or two so that my eyes can track the grades more easily. I keep two 12-color sets of these at work and one at home. I've had them for two years now and the ink hasn't run out yet. They photocopy beautifully, too. The point is thick enough to make your words stand out on paper, but fine enough to write tiny numbers in the margins if you want. I can't say enough about these markers. They are a real joy to use, and I will keep buying them again and again.

Paper Mate Flair pens are great all purpose pens for writing and sketching... my favorite type in fact. Their felt tip gives you a nice degree of control over line weight and quality. After receiving the pens I found them to be slightly different than some I purchased in a store several years ago. They write well and feel familiar but look slightly different than expected. The one's I bought previously were made in USA, had fine ridges along the length of the body, and had a white plastic band around the tip. These pens are made in Mexico, have a smooth body (no ridges), and have a clear plastic band around the tip. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase because (minor differences aside) these are the same great pens I've been using for years.
