teach an old dog to stitch!,
By Mixed-Media Maven "Jen" (Jacksonville, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paper, Metal & Stitch (Paperback)
i really thought that despite the beautiful cover and the name Maggie Grey, as she is quite the name when fabric is around, this book would be eye candy but not inspiring for me to "work on".
oh boy was i wrong! Ms. Grey's techniques for changing paper to metal and metal to stitch is quite fun! i thoroughly enjoyed just savoring every page the first time around and then i started actually playing. this is a terrific book for inspiration, teaching, learning, doing, and of course, her handiwork is quite the eye candy. i will have this book on my shelves for many years to come.

Maggie Grey writes again,
By Bellis "textile addict" (Victoria, BC Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paper, Metal & Stitch (Paperback)
In collaboration with Jane Wild, Maggie Grey has added a must have book for the 21st century textile artist or collage maker who uses fabric in the work.
Paper and metal are explored using very innovative techniques, the difficulties addressed, and the imagination stimulated. One problem is the lack of common availability of some of the supplies. I live in Canada and there are no Canadian sources listed, theough quite a few US ones. A time spent working through the techniques and projects explained would give the artist a wonderful portfolio of ideas. A great book: I would suggest it as an ideal present for anyone interested in the innovative use of either paper or metal with fabrics.

I have a huge library, but this book is my treasure. I only wish the book was available when I was taking my BFA classes. What a help it would have been to get my creative juices going. I love mixed media and this book is without doubt, the best!

Great eye candy and techniques for paper artists,
By
This review is from: Paper, Metal & Stitch (Paperback)
This is a wonderful raw art book. It has some great textures in it with instructions. It is truly a mixed-media book. There are sections on fabric, paper, metal, and how to combine techniques. There are some techniques in there that I have never tried. I have and they turned out great. I do a lot of raw art collages. I was able to glean a lot of ideas from this book. The colors and textures are great eye candy. What I liked most about this book was that it showed you what you could do with the technique once you tried it. I think that is something that every art book should do since a lot of us artists are visual learners. I think that newbies can learn from the techniques and see what are some of the possible end pieces. More experienced artists can try different techniques and glean ideas from the picts.

Absolutely love the art in this book. It isn't a how-to book, but gives you so many ideas and inspiration, that if you've done mixed media for a little while you probably can get a lot out of it.
I use it all the time to try new things and for inspiration.

Paper Muse,

This review is from: Paper, Metal & Stitch (Paperback)
Had to work today, so I took this book into the gallery with me. This book is enticing, enthralling, and full of that extra effort and creative spirit -- it's my paper muse.
Delicious! Additionally, it seems very approachable for someone new to paper arts (as I am) and yet was also enjoyed by someone who has taught paper arts.

Like the other reviewers, I was blown away when I first saw a copy of this book, and thought it was a "must have". Now I have it I am not disappointed. I like visually appealing books that allow your creative ideas to flow, so that there is no right or wrong way to approach something, just what works for you. I am a newbie to mixed media techniques, so find this inspirational. I already sew, crochet, weave, dye and spin, used to do a bit of painting, and have experimented with making paper fabric, so this will become a valued reference books for all these crafts; this will enhance my overall understanding of how each one works in with the other, and how I can use my skills in a totally different way.
I tend to swoop and dip into many craft books, but for this one I have started at the beginning, and I can see it becoming a very well-used volume in my library as I am sure I will refer back to it many times in the future. I now know what to do with all the fabrics left in my stash from my sewing days, and can spin my own art yarns to embellish them as I already love adding beads, bells and other items to my handspun. The incorporation of metals to this mix, along with a few quilting techniques, should keep me busy for many many months to come. |
