5.0 out of 5 stars PAPER MOON, May 10, 2002
By
This review is from: Paper Moon: A Novel (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. Having long been a fan of the movie, what a joy to discover the book that started it all. Addie Pray is a hilarious and charming narrator and her adventures pulled me happily along. A real treat. For anyone who likes stories of sassy girls growing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addie Pray is a wonderful book about life in the Depression., June 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Addie Pray (Hardcover)
Addie Pray is the best book I have ever read! It's about Addie, a 12- year- old girl who travels around the South with her "could- be" father Moses Pray. Also made into a movie called Paper Moon with Tatum O'Neal, this is one book that is AS GOOD as the movie!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and complementary, September 3, 2004
This review is from: Paper Moon: A Novel (Paperback)
Written in the style (and context) of Steinbeck, this book is excellent.

The remarkable thing about the book, though, is that it is one of the few instances where you should read and see both the book and movie. If you liked the movie, the book provides more stories and adventures; if you liked the book, the movie brings the characters, setting, and geography to life.

The book is very readable; in fact, I read all 300 pages in a day! I highly recommend this book; the movie only makes a very good story better.

5.0 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite!, July 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Addie Pray (Hardcover)
I can't believe this book is out of print! Although I enjoyed the movie when I saw it at the age of 12, it doesn't begin to do justice to the book, set in the deep South instead of the Midwest. How a man managed to capture the emotions and perspective of an preadolescent girl is simply amazing-reading it feels like you're sitting on the front porch, listening to your favorite eccentric aunt tell her life story. The down-home language and expressions had me rolling with laughter! This is a must-have if you can find it-when I lost my copy, I borrowed one from the library and photocopied the whole thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This Charming Book! (If you can find it)..., November 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Addie Pray (Hardcover)
I was excited when I found this book at a garage sale, as it's very hard to find. It is full of wit, charm, and intelligence, told through the eyes of a girl who is 12 years old, but going on 40.

And what a treat for fans of the film "Paper Moon"! It's like getting to read an unmade movie sequel -- since the actions in the movie cover only the first 1/3 of the novel. You get to read the "further adventures" of these two charming grifters as they hook up with a broad range of characters in a very well evoked 1930's southern U.S.

I tried to read this slowly because I didn't want the fun ride to end. If you find this at a garage sale, online auction, or the library, pick it up! You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read, March 24, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Paper Moon: A Novel (Paperback)
paper moon the book. from someone who grew up watching the movie. i remember being a little bitty thing sitting on the floor with my toys watching this movie with my mom. ive always loved it. (granted mom was a little bit more weary when tatum oneal came out with "little darlings" with christie mcnichol *laughs*)
well then i found out, now at the age of 24, that its a book. wow, im fast. lol
the book is somewhat different but the same story. mose is played under the name "long boy" though his true name is still moses. they include cons they didnt put in the movie. they put in some rather important to the plot parts about the story. they talk about addies mother which wasnt done much in the movie. also the burial scene wasnt in there because addie had known "long boy" since she was very little and they had always had a connection unlike in the movie where addie meets him for the first time at the funeral at opening of the film where he is reluctant to take her on the road.
the story also takes place over her being from ages 6-11 unlike the movie which didnt go that long through things. the book after you start it you cant put it down. i was up last night in the wee hours of the morning still going "ok, just one more chapter". its something that you should either see before the movie or after it, though if i could have gone back i would have read it first but i was way too young. when i first saw it i was still practically gnawing on the bars of my play pen...

5.0 out of 5 stars PAPER MOON RULES!, May 17, 2002
By

This review is from: Paper Moon: A Novel (Paperback)
Too long out of print, this paperback is a beauty. A compulsively readable book. Addie Pray and Long Boy take the South by storm. It's fun and fast, but also weighty and moving. The amazing movie was based just on the first third.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Favorite, December 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Paper Moon (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of this book, and have been for years. Luckily I already own a copy that once belonged to my mother, however for those of you searching for a copy, it is worth it! I first read this book as a young girl, and have made a point of reading it every summer for the past ten years. It is so awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid!, December 7, 2005
This review is from: Paper Moon: A Novel (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've had the pleasure to read in a while. I was already familiar with the basic story, having seen the movie "Paper Moon" (which I recommend highly!). When I started reading this, I was uncertain whether I'd be able to adjust to the change in location and dialect from the movie; the movie was set in the Midwest, the book in the Southeast. My doubts were quickly put to rest just pages into the book, when I became completely engrossed in the story and Brown's easy-going writing style. I plowed through the book in a couple days and enjoyed it thoroughly!

The book follows Addie Pray, a young orphan, as she travels around Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana with Long Boy, a con artist who may or may not be her father. During their travels, the two are always devising schemes to weasel money ouf of those who can afford to lose it. First it's the famous Bible-selling trick, but it quickly becomes so much more. There are plenty of deliciously eccentric characters, exciting chases, "heartwarming" moments, and a healthy dose of laughs.

If you liked the movie, don't miss reading the book. The movie plot is drawn only from the first 90-100 pages of the book; the remaining 200 pages present Addie and Mose (a.k.a. Long Boy) in entirely "new" situations. The book is a delight from beginning to end. Highly recommended!
