Alex Anderson's love affair with quiltmaking began in 1978, when she completed her Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt as part of her work toward a degree in art at San Francisco State University. Over the years, her focus has rested on understanding fabric relationships and on an intense appreciation for traditional quilting surface design and star quilts. Alex's mission is to educate, inspire, entertain, and grow today's quilting community. With this mission in mind, she has had the privilege and pleasure of ushering tens of thousands of new people into the world of quilting. For eleven years, she hosted television's premier quilt show, Simply Quilts, and she is currently the co-host and an executive producer of The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims (www.thequiltshow.com), an interactive website that features full production videos and is connecting quilters worldwide. This is a wonderful book of beautiful projects. However. not all of the blocks are paper pieced. There are some difficult curved seams and a crazy pieced block that are not for the beginner. Also the template on page 44 is too large for the dimensions noted in the directions for finishing the remainder of the basket block. The triangle must be reduced to fit the remainder of the dimensions. I am in the process of finishing the sampler on page 45. Although not extremely difficult, this is not a paper piecing book for the beginner. The patterns are beautiful and except for the problem that I found trying to complete the basket blocks for the sampler, the directions are clear. I will probably make another one of the projects. Her color choices are exquisite.

I took a paper piecing class some years ago, but found it so complicated that I couldn't use what I learned. Recently I signed up for another class and this book is required. Alex Anderson's directions are so clear, and her explanations are so easy to follow, that I made a wall hanging of spring flowers, even before I took the class.

If you are interested in learning to paper piece, you won't go wrong with this book. My only reservation is that four of the projects are very simple and one requires fairly advanced piecing skills. I would have preferred at least one intermediate-level project, but it's easy enough to use her technique with other projects.

Even I could understand the directions in the book. That is not to say it is at simpletons level. Alex progresses through difficulty levels. She uses great descriptions in directions. Great book to learn paper piecing from!and as a reference guide.
