I had my husband try to put these together for me, and he destroyed four of them because he didn't do it right. The lanterns just collapsed on themselves and it was ugly. Then I tried to put together the rest, and it worked just fine. The secret is that you have to open one side, then hold the cardboard insert inside to open up the other side. THEN you pull the two sides together to close it up. Hopefully this will save others from destroying several lanterns. I don't think there were any instructions in the package, so I figured this out with trial and error.

I'd envisioned having Chinese lanterns in my wedding tent as soon as I'd started planning it (we had a low key outdoor wedding) but after finding out how much that typically cost had almost given up hope. Until I found these! No, they didn't light up as I'd initially hoped, but it didn't matter. They were fun and pretty. Unless you walk right up to one and examine it closely (they don't close together seamlessly), they look great! I will very likely buy these again for another party and actually hung a few of those that were left over after the wedding above my son's changing table. He really enjoys when I bat them around for him. =)

As other reviewers have noted, just be gentle opening them up. They could tear reasonably easy if you're rough (but they're paper so this should probably not come as a huge surprise).
