Book Description

August 17, 2006
Lt. Lee Marks, a Fifth Air Force P-38 pilot, tastes the blend of excitement and fear as he enters the air war over 1944 New Guinea. In a campaign where the weather claims as many pilots as the Japanese, Marks must quickly learn the idiosyncrasies of both if he is to survive.

A rapid succession of air victories confirms his preparation for combat. But nothing in his training has prepared him for duty under Major Mo Brennan. A triple ace, Brennan manipulates his men and the system as efficiently as he eliminates the enemy. Becoming his leader's Exec, Lee Marks finds himself torn between what works and what is right, what the future might bring--and what he must sacrifice to find out. And he learns along the way that sometimes an airman's toughest battles are fought on the ground.

The rousing story traces the Allied course of action in the unique New Guinea campaign, and it explores the war, the men who make the war, and the natives who find themselves the hosts. The novel is sprinkled with GI humor, the uplifting ingredient that kept it all together, and it pays tribute to that highly sophisticated piece of engineering, Lockheed's P-38 Lightning.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Paper Statue, May 28, 2007

An excellent story. I could not put the book down. It did have two structural errors, however. The term "angels" was used as a substitute for feet of altitude, instead of thousands of feet of altitude as it should have been. Also, a few quotation marks were left out in certain places. I recommend this book highly, especially for any W.W.II flying buff.

If you like accounts of World War II both fiction and non-fiction, plus like stories about the planes and what kinds of people flew them; you won't miss on Roger Naylor's A Paper Statute. This is a good read even if you don't normally read this kind of story.

5.0 out of 5 stars two thumbs up, December 12, 2006
This review is from: A Paper Statue (Paperback)
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (11/06)

I have long been a reader of military history, particularly as it applies to the United States. Roger Naylor has written a work of fiction that is premised on the realities of WWII era pilots and their operations, as well as interactions with one another. His descriptions of the geography applicable to this element of the war put the reader right in the tent, the cafeteria, and certainly in the pilot's seat. The differing personalities of the pilots, the need for having a team, and the leadership that applied to decision making are well articulated.

Mr. Naylor's descriptions of aerial battles are excellent, as are the preparations the pilots engage in. Their personal battles, as well as with one another, and often the elements, are woven into the story in a manner that requires the reader to just keep reading. "A Paper Statue" really is a good book. I found myself unwilling to put the book down. I highly recommend it. I also have to give Mr. Naylor two thumbs up on this one.
