Editorial Reviews

2010 release. Paper Tongues, from Charlotte, NC, plays for the people. Fusing massive Rock 'n' Roll melodies with fiery Hip Hop beats, the band conjures and infections, incendiary sound on this debut. Embracing elements of Rock, Funk, Rap and Soul, the seven member band have created something you haven't heard or experienced before. It's music for dancing, crying, loving and living.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best New Band and Best Album of 2010! June 6, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Paper Tongues' debut deserves to ride a roller coaster to the top of the charts. Their fresh blend of rap, rock, and soul are a breath of fresh air in a music industry that often is inundated with copycat performers who don't stretch the envelope of creativity. From the opening notes of "Trinity," the listener is captivated by the band's solid musicianship, Aswan North's incredible vocals, and the band's positive, uplifting lyrics. This is a song that you can listen to a hundred times and not get tired of it. Same goes for the explosive rap workout, "Ride to California," and the chugging, rhythmic "Get Higher," a #1 hit song if ever I heard one. Through all ten tracks, Paper Tongues prove that this new decade is starting off to a promising start musically. Manager Randy Jackson should bring this band onto American Idol to perform so they receive the attention they deserve. This band should be breaking big and burning up the charts, as all ten tracks could be hit singles. If you have not bought this album, what are you waiting for? It is essential and signals a bright future for the music industry. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique... in a very good way April 7, 2010
Format:MP3 Music
I first saw these guys perform when they were one of 3 opening bands for Muse at a radio station concert in December. The energy Aswan North has on stage is absolutely contagious! The songs are a mixture of different genres but it all works very well. I just got back from their concert tonight in LA where we heard all of these songs performed live and it was absolutely fabulous! 5 stars for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST NEW BAND 2010: PAPER TONGUES April 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD
RIGHT FROM THE FIRST BEATS OF LEADOFF SONG "TRINITY" I WAS HOOKED. DON'T KNOW WHERE TO CLASSIFY THIS BAND AT- THEIR ROCK,ALTERNATIVE,HIP-HOP,SOUL,POP ALL MIXED INTO ONE AWESOME NEW BAND! "RIDE TO CALIFORNIA" & "GET HIGHER" ARE TWO OTHER STAND OUT TRACKS....."RIDE TO CALIFORNIA" IS A KICKIN' ROCK JAM WHILE "GET HIGHER" IS A MID-TEMPO POP NUGGET. THE BEST OF THE REST "FOR THE PEOPLE", "WHAT IF", "EVERYBODY" AND CLOSING TRACK "LOVE LIKE YOU". ONE THING OF NOTE LEAD SINGER ASWAN NORTH SOUNDS A BIT LIKE ROCCO DELUCA. SO IF YOU'RE A FAN OF ROCCO DELUCA AND THE BURDEN YOUR SURE TO LOVE PAPER TONGUES(NOT THE SAME STYLE OF MUSIC THOUGH). I BUY A LOT OF CD'S OF NEW BANDS AND MOST OF THEM GET A FEW LISTENS AND THEN ARE FORGOTTEN. I'M SURE I'M GONNA BE SPINNIN' THIS DISC FOR A LONG TIME. YOU HEARD OF THIS BAND HERE FIRST....THE "BIG TIME" IS COMING SOON!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hooks, hooks, and more hooks. July 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Paper Tongues' self-titled debut LP is unlike anything you've ever heard before. It's an oddly absorbing mish-mash of hip-hop, pop, alternative rock, and yes... they even dabble in some pseudo-country. What led me to this album was their live show, which was an accordingly strange experience. What was made evident to me in that setting, and even more so upon listening to this record, is their undeniable ability to craft a great melody.

Each song features at least one highly memorable hook, even when the lyrics get a bit self-serious or self-indulgent. It's no surprise that they caught the ear of Randy Jackson (of American Idol fame). He took a risk in signing this band - they're anything but a sure thing as a commercial success - but, for all their shortcomings (they can be lyrically and musically trite at times, bordering on annoying), they have an undeniably unique sound that could, nay, should turn heads.

This is a genre-bending, format-crossing release that manages to be equal parts inspiring, puzzling, daring, predictable, but most of all, unforgettable. It's definitely worth checking out as it has something to offer for all tastes. The band may not be able to get away with this "be all things to all people" approach again, but this time out, it works in their favor.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love the secret hits. April 11, 2014
Format:Audio CD
After hearing the amazing "Trinity", I had to hear more of this band. "Get Higher" starts off nice, and keeps getting better and better, until you get to that dull chorus. Once I heard the lackluster "Ride To California" I lost interest.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these other two songs are awful or anything, but when you hear a song as awesome as "Trinity" you're hoping to be blown away again.

After getting a new CD player installed in my car recently, I've been listening to a lot more music, and decided to go ahead and give this album a chance. I just wanted to know whether this band is just a one hit wonder, or if there was a hidden hit on this album that the band mistakenly didn't put on the radio.

I came into this album expecting disappointment, pessimistically believing the rest of these songs would be as blah as "Ride To California".

I'm not disappointed.

I was able to find the 2nd hit, that would have made this band huge. The amazing "Love Like You"! I've been listening to this album everyday just to hear this gem.

I also stumbled across the 3rd hit. It's called "Strongest Flame" and it's amazing.

And the rest of the songs are solid, other than the weak "For the People". Overall, the album has a good mix of high energy punch and soulful flow.

P.S. - I strongly prefer the beautiful acoustic version of "Get Higher" though the chorus is still dull.
