VOLUME NINE, January 1854-December 1857, The Smithsonian Years, edited by Marc Rothenberg. In 1854 the Smithsonian Institution faced a crisis that threatened to tear the young institution apart when Secretary Joseph Henry and Assistant Secretary Charles C. Jewett publicly clashed over its future direction. Volume nine documents not only this struggle to define the purpose of the Smithsonian but also Henry's motivations for accepting the national collections in 1857, an action that made the privately-endowed institution the overseer of the United States National Museum.
Librarians are requested to adjust their records to indicate SHP/USA as publisher of future volumes.
