Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Close to retirement, A.J. Wentworth, though well-intentioned, is a humorless and ineffective educator of the old school. Despite an unshakable faith in his own methods, he is ill-equipped to deal with the devious vagaries of the modern schoolboy. While he fusses over trivialities and worries over rules, the pupils of Set IIIA run riotous circles around him. Nor are his fellow masters above exploiting his gullibility and pomposity for their own amusement. As if this wasn't enough, Wentworth is prone to more than the odd accident--mishaps that inevitably lead him into all sorts of hot water. Yet Wentworth is determined to hold his head high and live in cheerful denial of the absurd hand life seems to have dealt him. A deadpan classic of English humor. Humphrey Ellis was Literary Editor of "PUNCH" and a contributor to "THE NEW YORKER."

5.0 out of 5 stars For Lovers of English Humor, November 1, 2000
By
John Sherman (Glendale, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Papers of A.J. Wentworth, Ba (Prion Humour Classics) (Hardcover)
H. F. Ellis' book is a true classic of written English humor. His work compares favorabily with the work of Jerome K. Jerome and P.G. Wodehouse. Ellis' dry sense of humor and excellent use of language makes this one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. At first, seeing the snooty pretensioness of schoolmaster A.J. Wentworth constantly pricked and deflated is hysterical, but before long you'll be on his side and saying aloud between the laughs "Poor, poor chap!"

5.0 out of 5 stars A wry comic classic, February 6, 2001
This review is from: The Papers of A.J. Wentworth, Ba (Prion Humour Classics) (Hardcover)
H.F. Ellis' Papers of .J. Wentworth, BA is a wry comic classic which presents the 'letters' of an unmarried teacher who comments on education, teaching methods, and obstinate pupils. A fun gift for any who appreciates humor, literature and the perils of teaching.

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated and very predictable humor, July 25, 2007

I did not laugh, and what worse, I left this book before the end, something I really rarely do.

This is NOT classic English humor. The comic situations are very basic and the dialogs not very witty. The effort to be funny is too obvious, and therefore ineffective.
