Henri Charriere was a Frenchman who was convicted in 1931 of a murder he did not commit. Sentenced to life imprisonment, he spent 12 years in the penal colony of French Guiana. After eight unsuccessful attempts to escape, he finally got away to Venezuela. More than 20 years later, when he was 60, Charriere wrote this story. Told in a spontaneous, straightforward style, PAPILLON became an international best seller and was made into a popular motion picture.

It is too good to miss!,

Hi, I owned the copy of this book for several years and I had read it 3 times. He will forever be an example and a teacher to me. To meet this great man would be a wonderful gift. Though he is no angel and life has brought out the ugliest of all of him, he remains a powerful influence. If he can be so strong in such situations (i.e. watching his best friend devoured by unforgiving sharks,withstanding solitary for two years in the most creative ways, the list goes on...for 13 years!) then I can survive anything this existence throws my way. I've met my Jesus through this book. I hope to read it again one day so as to have a greater appreciation of it, perhaps after i've been through some of my own horrors. I'll definitely see the movie. I've already passed the book on to a lucky person, despite that I'd love to keep it. Looking for adventure, romance, lust, utter suspense, even amusement (he's got a great sense of humour through it all)? HEAR IT!!!!!!!!

Great book... who cares if it might not be true?,

The authenticity of this book came into question soon after it was published and "Pappy" swore that all of it is true. All these years later and its still a source of controversy with the experts still doubting the truth. Is it true or not? I think that Charriere totally beleived in everything he wrote. What may not be true is that all of this didn't personnaly happen to him... he's telling the stories of men long forgotten in his own way by placing himself in their shoes and living it. Too good a read to pass up because it might not all be true.
