5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST ADVENTURE STORY EVER WRITTEN
Out of print? Well check your local library for a copy because you must read this book. I went to the library to check out Tom Wolfe's THE RIGHT STUFF but they did not have that book. So, I looked around for something else to read and that is when I saw PAPILLON. I was only vaguely familar with the man and his story but it looked interesting. I checked the book out and...

1.0 out of 5 stars YES! I AM A SUCKER AND I ADMIT IT!
I read this book twice because I identified strongly with the hero while I was homeless. It is truly a great book. One of my favorites. The struggle, the tension, are all here in the ordeal for "Pappy" to escape from Devil's island. I went through it fast. It is a true marvel. As I read it, I kept being astonished. Solitary confinement that makes you sweat...

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST ADVENTURE STORY EVER WRITTEN, January 16, 2000

This review is from: Papillón (Paperback)
Out of print? Well check your local library for a copy because you must read this book. I went to the library to check out Tom Wolfe's THE RIGHT STUFF but they did not have that book. So, I looked around for something else to read and that is when I saw PAPILLON. I was only vaguely familar with the man and his story but it looked interesting. I checked the book out and proceeded to read the greatest adventure story ever written. I could not put this book down until I was finished. I will never forget Papillon's amazing struggle for freedom and his life. Henri Charriere's writing made me feel like I was right there with him during his incredible adventures. Some people question the veracity of Charriere's story because they can not believe one man has been through so much and came out alive. I feel it is not important whether the whole story is really true or not, it is only important that you believe it is. Read this book and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Papillon: Unbreakable spirit, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Papillon (Spanish edition) (Paperback)
I read this book after my father's death; it was one of his favorite and now one of mine. It is impossible to maintain a stoic attitude towards the fortitude of its characters, the incredibly journeys at the turn of each page, and the amazing beauty and misfortune of the Caribbean and its people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, November 26, 2000

This review is from: Papillon (Spanish edition) (Paperback)
The man was a low life, no doubt about it...but he couldn't help what he was, he could only help what he'd become.

He had a tenacity for life. He proves the point that adventure is seldom fun while one goes through it.

If you like the style of this book, I recommend Slumblord! by Albert Lee. It is also a true story written down to earth with humor. Very different story but the tough minded characters are very similar in their approach to life and dealing with hardship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Papillon a good example of human courage, May 14, 2000
This review is from: Papillón (Paperback)
When I first read Papillon I was in school and I never found a book as good as this ever after. 'cause it's a lesson, a tale about hope and friendship, the whole story seems to put you there with Charriere that's the meaning of oral literature. his adventures, his scapes his sadness are an epopey of human strenght. and a lesson for living. Since it's begining, the trial then the fantastic scape from the hospital, the story of the money holders stored deep inside his body all this and His 13th years of adventures are filled with passion, love and truth. One book I recomend......of course Papillon. The greates story of freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Papi will always be a part of me., August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Papillón (Paperback)
I got this book by mistake while i was browsing at a used book shop. And let me tell you that that was the best fifty cents i have ever spent!!!!. I am currently 25 years old and there is nothing that can happen to me in this lifetime that Henry would not be able to overcome. Papillon is filled with so much positive outlook and energy that giving up was not an option at all. Despite all the misfortune Papi never lose track of his goal or accept his fate. I just wished that i was able to sit down with the man and have a beer with him. i will make sure that my son 'll read this book once he 'come of age. Steve mcQueen was more than incredible in that role. Papi is the true definition of triumph for the human spirit. He is the real true hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading a Classic while in the Belly of the Beast, February 11, 1999
This review is from: Papillón (Paperback)
I first read this book while I was locked up in Arlington, VA. I was awaiting trial and I picked up this book out of the inmate library. While I was reading it I wished that I was in an old prison like some in French Guiana. Unforunately I was in a modern facility where only Papillon himself could escape. This book got me through my time in prison and is a good read every few months.

5.0 out of 5 stars one to read again and again, December 12, 2000
This review is from: Papillon (Spanish edition) (Paperback)
this is a book that's up there with the godfather, similar actually, in that it's a story of an exceedingly macho yet modest guy. this is an adventure extraordinaire, and it's got the good moral overtones - you want to see this "wrongly accused criminal" get free. i do wonder, though, did this guy actually do what he was convicted of??? for many years, however, papillon, the man that is, as told through the book, has been a role model of mine (i rather hate to admit it), the guy who's so tough inside that nothing can beat him, no prison can chain him down forever, etc. ...[B]ut i would say, if you haven't read this, DO!

5.0 out of 5 stars OUT OF PRINT?, April 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Papillón (Paperback)
God what a shame that such a classic is out of print! ... what's next, the Bible? Probably the best real life adventure ever written. You wont believe the tragedies and thriumps narrated in this book. I read this book many years ago and still remember it as one of my favorite. Superior to the movie in every way. Don't deny yourself of reading this novel...
