This is the 3rd release by Filthy Thieving Bastards, and has a great deal of diversities that you can entertain in a full swing. Having heard a few comments regarding how they included 60's pop elements, I thought that they have developed very unique sound by effectively diversifying the range of music to be offered. Although I still consider "A Melody Of Retreads And Broken Quills" to be their best work, "My Pappy Was a Pistol" still holds the superb song-writing and instrumentation. In this work, they had tried a variety of the instruments, and brought so many arranges in the song structures. The 60's influenced songs are effectively placed between the fast tunes, like the ones appeared in their previous albums. So, it does not bother at all, actually I find it to be extremely entertaining.

With this CD, the band have further explored their songwriting skills to contextualize the melody, so the listeners cannot help hamming along. Every song is ridiculously catchy as the Beatles. I am certain that the listeners will be instantly hooked with the CD, not to mention to the band themselves. As a dedicated fan of Swingin' Utters myself, I have to admit that I am actually obsessed more with the Filthy Thieving Bastards, possibly because I have not heard any new from Swingin' Utters since the release of "Dead Flowers, Bottles, Bluegrass, and Bones," which is arguably their best, including the electronic version of "Hopeless Vows" originally performed by Filthy Thieving Bastards.

Anyway, you can be no wrong with having this CD. If you are not familiar with the band, I rather recommend, before purchasing this CD, to listen "A Melody Of Retreads And Broken Quills" and "Our Fathers Sent Us," because these are more approachable representation of the band.
