5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Matt..., December 17, 2003
By

This review is from: Para Toda Vida (Audio CD)
Everything Matt Pryor (or any Get Up Kid for that matter) touches is gold. This is no exception. In this project Pryor strays a bit from the standard acoustic rock of 'Never You Mind', but he manages to do so while still keeping an even flow throughout the album. I've never been a bluegrass fan, but something about the way Matt approaches the genre makes it really good. Unfortunately on his latest release 'Worse for the Wear' he loses that flow by changing song style too frequently. If you haven't heard 'Stay on the Phone' you really need to buy this album. That is probably my all-time favourite song.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Get up Kid, February 11, 2002
By
"pablosd" (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Para Toda Vida (Audio CD)
Matthew Pryor (singer, guitarist for the Get Up Kids) releases his second solo album as The New Amsterdams. The album's opening notes of harmonica and acoustic guitar remind me (in a good way) of Bruce Springsteen. Album highlights are song 2 (picture in the paper) and 3 (son of a prophet). These are excellent, beautifully written and sung songs that, unfortunately, set too high a bar for the rest of the album. While still good, after the three song intro the music tends to blend together.

Fans of GUK will recognize the sound from "Out of Reach" and "I'll Catch You" from Something to Write Home About.

Bottom Line: Good, not excellent

4.0 out of 5 stars Its better than the last album, March 1, 2003
By
This review is from: Para Toda Vida (Audio CD)
They mold a bluegrassy sound into there music. Which makes it sound unique, and much better than "Never You Mind". Stand out tracks would be "My Old Man Had a Pistol", "Four More Years" and "Son of a Prophet". They also incorporate the harminoca in some of their songs. The rest of the songs on this score are MUCH better than any on their last CD. Though they have developed a much more unique and better sound than some bands like "Dashboard Confessional" their lyrics arn't as meaningful or heartfelt(Which can be a relief). This band has developed greatly since their previous release.
