Book Description

September 15, 2006
This superb work, first published in 1864, contains thirty-three of Our Lord s Parables, of which nineteen were masterfully illustrated by John Everett Millais and beautifully finished by the Dalziels brothers, master engravers whose skills were applied to many of the most important works of the day. For this particular project, the Dalziels used wood engravings. The Parables were an important work for Millais, and he spent over six years developing and illustrating them. It was time well spent. For as the original publisher states in the preface, it allowed Millais to give that care and consideration to his subjects, which the beauty as well as the importance of The Parables demanded. With this new edition, the guidance and inspiration that The Parables have brought to so many, is once again available together with the beauty of Millais s magnificent illustrations.

About the Author

Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Baronet (June 8, 1829 August 13, 1896) was a British painter and illustrator who was one of founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Millais was also very successful as a book illustrator, notably for the works of Anthony Trollope and the poems of Tennyson. His complex illustrations of the parables of Jesus were published in 1864. His father-in-law commissioned stained-glass windows based on them for a church in Perth. He also provided illustrations for magazines such as Good Words. In 1869 he was recruited as an artist for the newly founded weekly newspaper The Graphic. Millias was elected as an associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1853, and was soon elected as a full member of the Academy, in which he was a prominent and active participant. He was granted a baronetcy in 1885, the first artist to be honoured with an hereditary title. After the death of Frederic Leighton in 1896, Millais was elected President of the Royal Academy, but he died later in the same year from throat cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work, December 30, 2006

This review is from: Parables of Our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ (Paperback)
J.E. Millais is one of the founders of the pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and the works that one will mostly likely be familiar with or see at a major museum are his beautiful paintings. However, Millais also did commission work for book publishers (black & white illustrations) and The Parables is far and away the most famous of these.

An original edition of this work is worth hundreds of dollars if not much more. Over the years, the work (originally published in 1864) has been reprinted but none of those editions remain in print and so I was very pleased to see it brought back into print.

I find the illustrations that Millais did for the Parables to be very powerful - particularly The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son. There are 33 Parables in this work - though only 19 were illustrated by Millais. Regardless, this is a wonderful work, well done, and very much recommended.
