Book Description

October 1, 2000
A volume of fiction built upon parables, satires, paradoxes and mystic teaching tales. "The Sufis and their predecessors have used the parable and the 'teaching tale' extensively as one of their modes of contemplation. This is similar to the way Zen has employed parables and paradoxes -- in trying to impart insight that is different from that produced by normal intellect.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

But what is a parable? The Sufis and their predecessors have used the parable and "teaching tale" extensively as one of their modes of contemplation. This is similar to the way Zen has employed parables and paradoxes--in trying to impart insight that is different from that produced by normal intellect ... The word "parable" derives from the Latin "parabola." What is a parabola in fact? Aside from designating a perfect geometric arc, which can be evenly divided by a vertical bisecting line up the middle, it has connotations of "throwing to the other side ..."

On FOREIGNERS:

"[An] absurdist mind grenade for the 90s ... Joe Martin's first novel paints this neo-European shadow landscape with panache. The biggest surprise, however, may be learning that this modern day Tower of Babel was concocted by a gifted American writer."

--Richard Peabody, Editor, Gargoyle

On CONSPIRACIES: SIX PLAYS

"[A] splendid introduction to one of the most exciting playwrights in the country."

--DRAMALOGUE, Hollywood, California

On STRINDBERG--OTHER SIDES

"Martin is not far behind [Strindberg] in versatility. Martin's experience as a scholar, playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, theatre director ... is a perfect fit, as he presents 'other sides' of Strindberg to a North American public."

--Bjorn Meidal, The Strindberg Society

On the stage version of PARABOLA: TALES OF THE WISE AND THE IDIOTS:

"... through the tighly structured geometry of this metaphorically rich [work] is a recognition of the search we undertake to fix a place for ourselves ... and try to make sense of a confusing, alienating and often combative world."

--Cheryl Pallant, HIGH PERFORMANCE
