Editorial Reviews

The Rolling Stone Album of the Year for 1970: Let It Be? Morrison Hotel? Moondance? After the Gold Rush? Nope: it was Parachute , a harmony-heavy rocker and another stunning concept album following on the heels of S.F. Sorrow . Here's In the Square; The Letter; Rain; Miss Fay Regrets; Grass , and the rest of the original LP plus period singles and recently recorded acoustic reinterpretations!

Yeah! If you are reading this then you know about the album. It is the same as the original Snapper release except now you get two discs.
The first being the original album, the second disc features all the bonus singles and b-sides (which were on the original Snapper release)plus best of all and exclusive to this limited addition 40th Anniversary are 7 brand spanking new acoustic reworkings of 'Parachute' songs by the current line-up. Although I can honestly say being acoustic with no drums or bass I can really only hear Jon Povey, Wally Waller, Phil May and possibly Dick Taylor. Still it is very cool. Kinda like when the band recorded a new song for the re-release of the 'Philippe Debarge' CD. IMHO anything newly recorded by the PT's is worth owning. A very nicely packaged collectable.

A true rock classic that begins with an almost Can like industrial sound with fiery drumming which then segues into a suite of beautiful lyrical & mostly acoustic songs with spiraling/complex vocal harmonies combined with Fx & sitar & harpsichord (the 1st 5 songs). The dynamite hard rocking prog songs utilizing excellent guitar & mellotrone including Sickle Clowns, She's a Lover & Cries from the Midnight Circus (a longish & brilliantly developed song & dissertation on the underbelly of city life) & an absolutely cracking production from Norman Smith (of early Pink Floyd fame). The final coda song Parachute with its building oscillator sound & intricate harmonies allows the listener to leave on a sonic & philosophic high hard to beat. The original album was voted album of the year by Rolling Stone muso journal in 1970 & why it didn't sell like hotcakes will be forever a mystery as it is easily 1 of the best rock music releases ever & displays an incredible band in top form.

The remaster is excellent, the booklet is very informative & with the wonderful addition of the 6 original awesome bonus tracks (proper tracks, not spurious demo's with mostly there new guitarist P. Tolsen a master guitarist who utilized the wah wah pedal exceedingly well) & 7 acoustic re-recordings circa 2010 (a bit of a lost opportunity as its basically just singing & acoustic guitar , however, it shows just how strong songs like Sickle Clowns & Cries from the Midnight Circus are). The original album is so strong that it is a definite advantage dividing it from all the bonus tracks.

This album is up there with Pink Floyd, Led Zep & the Rolling Stones at their zenith. A wonderful album that only gets better with each listen. A must buy for any discerning rock music fan. My only quibble is that I would have loved it to be a double album because the music is superb. 10/10

This review is about this new edition, not the music !

This "40th anniversary edition" is exactly the same as the previous one, with the same bonus tracks; the difference is that the extra tracks are now on a second disc.
The sticker on the plastic packaging announces some "secret (sic!) acoustic re-recordings" on the second CD.
Don't throw this sticker away, as you won't get any other information on these re-recordings in the useless and uninteresting booklet; no track by track, historical or recording details, just a pale text trying to explain that this is a great underrated album. But we already knew that, didn't we ?

Sad !

i love this record,
the sound of it,
the songs,

the feel,

the longer jam songs
the short abbey road 1 minute suites

it feels at the perfect crossorads
between the psych craze
and the stripped down rock records
of the early 70's

get this if you like
69/70 stones,
the hard rock/ harmony mashups of the beatles
etc.

stellar!!
