This review is from: Paradise (Audio CD)
I believe listeners would get more for their money (although I bought this through a third party here on Amazon for about $8.00 including shipping) with the 40th Anniversary package.
My reason for buying this was to get a copy of Fury's version of "Love Or Money" to compare it to the Blackwell's (much superior) 1961 version. My thoughts about the tracks on this: 1. Halfway To Paradise 7 out of 10. Tony Orlando's version is the better, but this isn't bad. 2. It's Only Make Believe 4/10 Conway Twitty's version better 3. Last Night Was Made For Love 10/10 This is the song that turned me on to Fury (who got basically zero airplay in the states in the early 60's.) It's overproduced in the best Gene Pitney vein, and my favorite Billy Fury side. It's on most of the other compilations of his songs. 4. I Will 7/10 5. Wondrous Place 7/10 (I'd be curious to hear the "2nd version" noted on other compilations.) 6. Don't Worry 5/10 7. We Were Meant For Each Other 9/10 8. Our Day Will Come 2/10 A poor version of the hit by Ruby & the Romantics 9. I'll Never Fall in Love Again 8/10 10. Forget Him 3/10 Lackluster version of the Bobby Rydell hit. 11. Love Or Money 7/10 a different take on the Blackwell's version, minus those extraodinary violins; good in its own way 12. Begin The Beguine 0/10 awful. Fury may have been trying to follow in Paul Anka's footsteps, but this wasn't his forte. 13. Be Mine Tonight 8/10 14. Don't Leave Me This Way 6/10 |
