Book Description

John Milton put a twist on the story of Adam and Eve--in the process he created what some have called one of the greatest literary works in the English Language. It has inspired music, art, film, and even video games. But it's hundreds of years old and reading it today sometimes is a little tough. BookCaps is here to help!

BookCaps puts a fresh spin on Milton’s classic by using language modern readers won't struggle to make sense of.

The original English text is also presented in the book, along with a comparable version of both text.

We all need refreshers every now and then. Whether you are a student trying to cram for that big final, or someone just trying to understand a book more, BookCaps™ can help. We are a small, but growing company, and are adding titles every month.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL TRANSLATION June 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to get my students more enthusiastic about literature. I love the classics but I completely understand why they aren't the most fascinating to read. In an age where we have Facebook, Twitter and even Spotify, it's not easy to read language that is not in text speak. John Milton didn't write this tale with the expectation that he'd be competing with OMG and LOL. (Great as those phrases are -- Milton is better!)

This version of Paradise Lost offers the reader an opportunity to read the author's incredible sentences and engaging language without the headache of dissecting what he's trying to say. This is a brilliant English classic and now it's accessible to us all. Highly recommended to students studying in need of some extra help.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly good June 18, 2012
If you want to understand Milton's Paradise Lost, this is a good version of a modernized translation. Although fairly wooden in its prose, it doesn't change the meaning of many passages like Joseph Lanzara's paraphrase. The third (not fourth) edition of Norton's Critical Edition also provides a lot of notes, although it only has the original text. But like I always say: If you want to really get the most out of literature, the best version is usually two or three versions together.

The main thing I dislike about this version, is that is shouldn't have been too hard to put the original and modern translation on facing pages, rather than sometimes having the modern translation on the opposite side of the same sheet. I realize what BookCaps probably did was take the kindle version and just convert it to paperback without a thought to aligning the text on two side-by-side facing pages (which would be pointless in the kindle edition). It just seems like if you go through the trouble of making this modernized translation, you could take a day to re-align the pages for the paperback, so it wasn't so clumsy to compare lines toward the middle or end of a section.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Saver for AP Summer Work September 3, 2012
By Nikki
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had to read paradise lost as an AP summer assignment, but didn't have the time to try to understand every single line. This book made everything so easy to understand, and I actually found it pretty interesting. The assignment I thought would take me a week to do took me about a day--- my friends bought it too and finished their assignment in no time. The best thing about this translation is that it actually goes line by line, instead of trying to paraphrase a bunch of lines. That way, when you need to refer to it for an essay or such, you can go back to the original and match up the lines. And I love the layout of the book. It takes small sections, shows the original version, and then translates it below or on the next page. Plus, it comes with just a translated version and the original version. No lie, this book is Heaven to an AP kid on a schedule!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book for Kindle paperwhite! March 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got off to a great start with this book. It was really interesting but then about 40% of the way through the book the modern translation of the book (the reason I bought it) was off the edges of the screen. I tried adjusting the margins but that didn't help. Imagine just getting to read about half a disappointing:(

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it for class January 15, 2013

But completed it for my pleasure. Milton's Satan is delightfully courageous and likable. He is the only notable character in the story. Simple English version is a great book for anyone needing help in understanding this piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Helped January 1, 2013
By Ella
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this modern translation of Paradise Lost, it really helped me pull through when we went over it in my literature class. I found a sampler of another version, but found that it summarized way too much and felt like I was missing out on details that I needed to do my homework properly. This one just changed words and rearranged lines where possible to make it more understandable to the modern English speaker, which is exactly what I had been looking for when I found it. My only problem with is was that it did not give me the line numbers, so I had to go through my text book copy and try to compare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monumental Epic December 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't realize how much there is to this epic. Almost all of Christian ideas are presented. Plus many of the questions we ask. This is a very difficult poem to understand since this is the English, spelling, and grammar of the 17th century. If they had updated the spelling and broken the segments into smaller chunks it would have been much easier to comprehend. Having said that, this truly a great piece of literature and well worth your time and energy.
