Book Description

Paradise Kiss August 13, 2002
Yukari's got big problems. She used to be a normal school girl with classes and homework just like everyone else. But, ever since she met the fashion-forward posse known as Paradise Kiss, her life has been turned upside-down. She's fallen in love with fashion designer extraordinare George, a major player who calls himself an "equal opportunity lover." Her newfound love of modeling doesn't exactly thrill her parents - or fit in with her former long-term goals. And, since she's started cutting class to hang with her new friends, she's in danger of being kicked out of her casa. How's a fashion-obsessed supermodel-wannabe supposed to deal? Put on your coolest outfit, and join Yukari as she navigates her way through this wild world of fab fashions, fun friendships, and foxy fellas.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The leading "indy" shojo manga artist in Japan.

From the Inside Flap

The intelligence behind the dialogue holds the wild plot together, and like Yukari, readers will find this world an almost irresistible escape.
-- Publishers Weekly

Yazawa puts a great deal of detail into her stylish black-and-white renderings of clothes, and she breaks the fourth wall occasionally with some amusing self-referential humor.
-- Library Journal, May 1, 2003

The art in this series is guaranteed to be unlike any manga you've seen with a unique way of inking and fresh character designs. That comes as no surprise, since the series debuted in the fashion magazine Zipper. Longtime fans of the manga-ka Ai Yazawa will be happy to see some of the characters from her earlier manga, Neighborhood Stories, reprised for this series. There is a lot of 'breaking the fourth wall' here, allowing for some truly inspired and funny dialogue as the cast members talk about themselves knowingly as manga characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Goodness, November 22, 2002

This review is from: Paradise Kiss, Book 2 (Paperback)
I like this volume a little better than the first one, because we get to know the whole cast a little more and get some hints as to what drives the characters. Yukari does seem a bit weak in most of the volume, but she starts to pull herself together toward the end, trying to establish herself. I thought her weakness was actually well done and sets up her trying to carve a place for herself. All I know is I can't wait to get my grubby paws on volume 3. I haven't been this hungry for the next volume of a comic in ages!...

5.0 out of 5 stars Paradise Kiss - Volume 5: Yay Isabella on the cover!!!!, May 22, 2004
This review is from: Paradise Kiss, Vol. 5 (Paperback)
This volume of course, starts exactly where we left off in Volume 4. The show is over and George is dealing with the fact that his designs are to unique to ever be widely accepted. Yukari abd George's relationship has hit a plateau and Yukari's not sure where to go with the relationship.

I really don't want to say anything else about the plot, but I will say that this, as far as shoujo goes, is the most realistic one I've ever read. I mean even though there are some unrealistic characters(Seiji for example), the story always stays firmly rooted in reality. And the ending is no different. It is a very bittersweet ending, I wouldn't have ended it differently, but its still very bittersweet.

I hope you enjoy this last volume of Paradise Kiss, I did, oh, and if you need ANY reason to read it, you find out Isabella's real name. hehe ;P

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

5.0 out of 5 stars Para-kiss is totally awesome!!!, April 27, 2003

This review is from: Paradise Kiss, Book 2 (Paperback)
The drwing style is a bit wierd, but possible to adjust to. And so worth doing so!
Yukari is one of those perfect kind of girls: Very studious, always obeying her parents wishes, never doing anything unexpected, wrong, or, well, anything except perfect. She doesn't have an easy time with it, though. When she runs into a punk and a transvestite on the street one day and is asked to modle clothing for them, she adamently refuses. At first. But then she meets George, the designer for Para-kiss, and she has to wonder if she should accept their invitation into this new, wonderful, and forbidden world.
