The Sound sits precariously on the convergence of two continental plates. The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the earth is composed of large, rigid plates which constantly move. The violent shifting of these plates resulted in the Good Friday earthquake on March 27, 1964, sending shock waves that measured 8.6 on the Richter Scale. The eastern shore of Montague Island thrust upwards 38 feet while the western shore sank into the ocean. For more than three minutes the earth convulsed, rolling and cracking and deforming its surface outwards in a 200-mile radius from the epicenter. Gigantic waves called tsunamis set out to sea, reaching as far away as Hawaii.
