Book Description

March 1, 1995
Prince William Sound (site of the Exxon Valdez oil spill) is now one of Alaska's hottest tour destinations. This area is a marine paradise of fjords, forested islands and quiet bays, set at the foot of the Chugach Mountains in Southcentral Alaska. The sound is now a popular destination for boaters, kayakers and cruise ship travelers. This full color 96-page pictorial is the only such book covering this unique corner of Alaska. 9 x 12 inches size.

From the Back Cover

The Sound sits precariously on the convergence of two continental plates. The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the earth is composed of large, rigid plates which constantly move. The violent shifting of these plates resulted in the Good Friday earthquake on March 27, 1964, sending shock waves that measured 8.6 on the Richter Scale. The eastern shore of Montague Island thrust upwards 38 feet while the western shore sank into the ocean. For more than three minutes the earth convulsed, rolling and cracking and deforming its surface outwards in a 200-mile radius from the epicenter. Gigantic waves called tsunamis set out to sea, reaching as far away as Hawaii.
