Book Description

(NOTE: Book 2, Once Again, With Blood, is now available)

Kyle Brightman--late of the advertising industry and soon-to-be-late of the 5th floor psych ward--has a job offer he can't refuse. A new resort in the Caribbean is looking for an art director. Kyle soon finds himself on the Isle of St. Agrippina working alongside a beautiful copywriter with an icy handshake. Questions arise: Why does the resort management team sport spray-on tans in the Bahamas? How can the resort offer such cheap vacation packages? What does one do with vats of Astroglide? To get the answers, Kyle must first navigate a series of wildly unpredictable events with a cast of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including a seductress jungle assassin, her partially paralyzed talking Chihuahua, an Ivy League Rastafarian seaplane captain, Kyle's ex-psych ward roommate, a former Haliburton mercenary, and a French tavern owner with a fondness for goats, all set to the greatest hits of the 70's. Pablo Cruise never felt so right.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Larry Weiner is the author of PARADISE ROT (BOOK ONE) and ONCE AGAIN, WITH BLOOD (BOOK TWO). Larry earned a degree in film from CSULA and was an award-winning art director. And then he got the hell out of Dodge (advertising) and decided he was better at fiction for the greater good (entertainment) than fiction to make people buy shit they don't need (advertising). He'd written two novels and a ton of scripts in his 20's but doesn't really count them as over 20 years passed since writing Paradise Rot. So really, let's call Paradise Rot the first novel. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, two kids and a gaggle of animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars zombies.done.fun! September 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a fun read which I finished in a few short sessions. There is an ensemble cast of quirky characters covering both the good guys and the villains which provided me with great entertainment.

* A dog in wheelchair named Cujo
* A gun toting jungle woman named Woman
* Mental illness refugees Oscar and Kyle
* Strong willed fr-enemies Cate and Dory
* Jimmy Dank the Rastafarian sea-pilot
* Barkeep Thierry
* The Talkative Jackson villain #1
* Kampo his quiet henchmen
* and the list goes on and on.

Without spoiling this humorous plot, I'll try to sum up the fun in one sentence: Caribbean island resort run by a group of Undead businessman with plans to ship in fresh meat (cough.. cough... tourists) vs. an ad hoc group of mostly do-gooders.

There were many laugh-out-loud moments for me during this book, and that alone is worth recommending to anyone wanting an enjoyable read. Scores an 8/10 on my rating board.

The title says Book 1, and after reading it I'm not sure where the next story would go --- that doesn't matter; sign me up for #2 anyhow.

What a riot! I truly couldn't stop reading! Great characters and concept. Maybe the most entertaining read this summer! Anything I could say about the setup and plot would be a spoiler, so I'll just say... Read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twists, Turns, Suspense and Humor! September 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Paradise Rot is a fun read with many twists within characters and plot. Furthermore, Weiner's blunt humor gives small hints to bigger picture motifs. The two curious quotes the author chose to open with alone are a good representation of the irony, satire and playfulness that the book immerses you in. Although it might seem like an "entertainment" read on the surface, there is great use of symbolism through plot and description. I know I'm eager to see what book 2 will feature!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST 99 cents that I ever spent! March 24, 2014
By Kydon

OK, so I didn't know it was a zombie book when I bought it. I know......the word rot in the title and the picture on the cover should have been a clue. I can't sleep at night if I read creepy stuff, but the only sleep I lost this time was because I couldn't put it down. I love a book that makes me laugh out loud and this one did more than once. Can't wait for another!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Original September 14, 2013
By Jules
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Larry Weiner writes with a vivid and distinctive voice. His characters are strong and well portrayed.
The story develops quickly and with a style and sense of humor unique to the author.
Some sections were laugh out loud funny!
Though there were parts that made me squirm, I could not put the book down, and
I am looking forward to Part 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky. Burlesque. Macabre. Hysterical. April 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have never read a zombie book other than the mediocre spoof "Pride Prejudice and Zombies" so was apprehensive as to try "Paradise Rot" by debut author, Larry Weiner. But for the giveaway price of $1.99, meh! Why not? The first page has a Wikipedia description, "A separate ethical distinction can be made between killing a human for food (homicidal cannibalism) and eating the flesh of a person who was already dead (nacre-cannibalism)"... which made my brows furrow, and then right below it, "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again." Scarlett O'Hara. LOLOLOLOL-- I was in!
"Paradise Rot" opens with ad man, Kyle Brightman, hog tied in a Seattle psyche ward after he has cracked in a grocery store. When he asks the strapping orderly what will happen to him if he doesn't recover, he is told, " 'You will,' Hap said. 'I been doing this a long time and I can tell the ones who are gonna make it and the ones who fall through the cracks. You're the first one.' 'What do you tell the ones who are gonna fall through the cracks?' Kyle said. 'Same bull* I told you,' Hap said." Funny banter!
While undergoing treatment, he gets a job offer as an art director on a soon-to-open luxury resort in the Caribbean, catering to middle income families. (Curiouser and curiouser.) As soon as he is able to get released, Kyle finds himself on board a private plane off to a beautiful island and working with a gorgeous and very pale copywriter...with cold hands. But almost from the first, things are "odd"-- but as the new guy with a swank opportunity, who is he to ask driving questions? At the resort and in the jungle, he meets a series of unconventional (quirky) characters, full of witty (burlesque) innuendo adding to the chilling (macabre) suspense. All my prejudices against zombie books have been blown out of the water as author Larry Weiner has crafted a clever, perfectly paced, and down-right hysterical tale. Surprisingly, I can't wait to read Book 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleazeburgers in Paradise June 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"She was hundreds of years too old for this s***."

That right there, is the funniest single line in the distinguished history of zombie literature.

PARADISE ROT is about zombies. Also about vampires, advertising people (same dif), gun runners, gay baristas, talking Chihuahuas and necrophiliacs. Also about weird people. But at heart, it's about people. Dealing with apocalyptic weirdness at a posh Caribbean resort and trying to stake out (pun intended) a moral compass point in the midst of mass homicide. To a Seventies pop soundtrack. It's Jimmy Buffett and Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard and Don Draper taking turns whacking Anne Rice with a cricket bat.

Larry Weiner has created a well-crafted, fast-paced comic thriller of pancreas-rupturing hilarity, loaded with heart, colored with sharp cultural observations and dry-rubbed in the spices of folklore and history. And populated by a gang of glib misfits you'll come to love — Kyle the bipolar Mad Men burnout; Cate, the sort-of zombie with a soft spot for emotionally infantilized men; Jimmy Dank, the erudite Ivy Leaguer pretending to be a Rastomon; Oscar, the PTSD-addled ex-Marine with a fondness for blowing s*** up; Dog the half-paralyzed undead talking Chihuahua; and many others.

PARADISE ROT is the perfect beach read. Or would be if it didn't get you to thinking who — or what — might be eyeing you as a happy-hour slider. Savor over a Moscow Mule and live, or unlive, with whatever happens.
