5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic in every way, September 27, 2002
By
This review is from: Paradize (Audio CD)
I first heard Indochine listening to French radio stations streaming on the Internet in my office in LA. J'ai Demande a La Lune caught my attention every time they played it. It's a beautiful, simple song that perfectly captures the feelings of a lost relationship. I picked up the album at a Virgin Megastore in Chicago on my way to Paris for vacation. I couldn't stop listening to it, and am still listening to it every day. Mao Boy is the second single off the album, and it's every bit as sweet as the first single.

Yes, they remind me of The Cure. Some of the lyrics are typically goth, but ultimately they're either romantically optimistic or really sexy. I find myself singing "je veux vivre, je veux vivre, en peu plus fort" and "est-ce que tu viendrais faire, le sexe avec moi!"

If you like The Cure, and if you can understand even a little of the lyrics, you won't be disappointed. This album is a classic. This group is not just some 80s band stuck in their 80s sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny Little Frenchmen, Noveau Vague 20 ans apres le fait, December 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Paradize (Audio CD)
This is a great album. It's like vintage Depeche Mode or New Order in all it's arch hip goofiness, only very slightly darker, not quite as pop (but very close! Not to worry!) in French & twenty years late..

Or is it late? It all started with those crazy French to begin with, no? Back in the sixties? Isn't New Wave nothing more than Rive Gauche artiness, androgyny, faux intellectuallism & caberet style (clothes! make up! hair!) all fused with that punk rock sensibility? Maybe it's not late, just perpetual?

It's great stuff, anyhow. Dig it, man. Dig it. Creuse-le, mon frere.

Heh heh.

Let me just reccomend you cue up the title track "Paradize," then "Mao Boy!" (Mao Boy! Love the title!) and "J'ai Demandé À La Lune" (FANTASTIC song - "Je n'ai pas grand chose à te dire, et pas grand chose pour te faire rire, car j'imagine toujours le pire et le meilleur me fait souffrir.." Such angst, quelle tristesse! Those poor tortured little Frenchboys..)

Then there is the gorgeously titled "Popstitute" (heh heh - no English speaking band would dare, probably, which is why I thank God we have the French & Germans..) a slightly bouncy incessant tune, garnished with electronic effects. I like the last song, Un Signe En Hiver, too, which opens with a minute of piano accompanied singing before the drum machine kicks in and drives us to a slight uptempo finish.

Those are the honorable mentions. If you enjoy retro 80's music and like French, then this is the band (and album) for you. Achete-le.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mon ablum préféré du semestre..., July 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Paradize (Audio CD)
I always have an album to define my semester its so weird. Paradize was my Spring 2003 ablum. I absolutely love it, especially since I'm a French Literature major :o). Its awesome if you could understand the words. I find what he says to be amusing and very French! "les américains et les chinois abolissent la peine de mort, je vous prédis dans ce pays joie et bonheur."

My favourite is of course LE MANOIR. This song is simply AWESOME!!! I recommend this album even if you don't speak French. It's different and its always awesome to veer away from that horrible American pop on the radio.

I heard Indochine's music a few days ago on a tv channel named Arte. They were playin' with Eskobar.I found their music great so I started searching on the internet. It's a bit difficult cos I don't speak French. The music made me addicted,it's beautiful! The song named Le Grand Secret is one of the best songs I've ever heard. They have many albums so it will take time to be up to date in Indochine's music, but I think it will be fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indochine, c'est la paradise..., July 27, 2002

Indochine returns to us with a whole new sound and new attitude. Paradize is one of the greatest Indochine album that I have. I first discovered the group as a sophomore in college when a friend from France sent me a compilation of French music. He had included Indochine among others. I immediately became hooked on the early sounds of the group. Since then, I have almost all of their albums, including Nicola Sirkis solo cd. As a French major, Indochine really helped me improve with my French. I had the grand opportunity to travel to Paris where I bought a majority of my Indochine albums.

When I received the Paradize album, I was completely blown away with their new sound. I think that during the 80s, their major influences came from The Cure and Depeche Mode. Now, in recent years, I can hear new influences coming from Nine Inch Nails and Marylin Manson. However they sound or whatever they sing, I will always be open to their music.

My favorites are Paradize, Electrastar, Punker, Mao Boy, J'ai Demande a la Lune, Le Manoir, Popstitute, and Un Singe en Hiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars captivating Paradize, August 28, 2002
This review is from: Paradize (Audio CD)
I first sampled Indochine's music last on holiday in Paris, in the form of Paradize. I don't speak French, but it was the sound that I found to be captivating. It reminded me of one of my favourite groups, Dandy Warhols. I spent about an hour at one of those music listening posts in a famous Paris music store -beginning with the letter F - on Avenue de Terrnes, and became addicted. Loved the album, but when I then sampled all of their other albums, I found that their style used to be very different, and I did not not really like these earlier albums. but Paradize is very, very different, and I play it in my car every day since coming home from my holiday. Another positive point for me is that many of the tracks are well over 5 minutes long, allowing the group to weave inventively around the main theme. It really grows more and more on you. So although I can't dig the lyrics, it's the sound that got to me, which anyway is usually what music is mainly about, isn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars Indochine's rebirth, August 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Paradize (Audio CD)
I have known Indochine's music for a very long time now. I was particularly keen during their heydey in the 80's. Since then, they have been less successful, until this new album was released. I think it is a new beginning for the group. The style is very different from what it used to be, but this should come as no surprise: two of the four original members have left (including Dominique who used to compose most of the songs) and a third, Stephane, passed away a few years ago. Nicola Sirkis has surrounded himself with a new group of people to produce this album.
The first song I heard was j'ai demande a la lune and I fell in love with it. Being familiar with their old songs,I was a little surprised by their new sound and it took me a little while to get used to it, but now that I have, I love it...

4.0 out of 5 stars Indochine Back in Form, June 21, 2002

Firstly, let me clear a misconception. I believe the editorial review presents Indochine's latest album as the "Hit album from 2002 by the most popular hard rock band". Indochine is everything but a hard rock band.

I was a fan of Indochine in the 1980's. I stopped following the band in 1991. At that time, Indochine was running out of inspiration. To tell you the truth, until very recently, I thought the band was dismembered. It is only when I read a glowing review of Paradize that I decided to give Indochine another chance.

This is a brilliant album with great lyrics. For those who do not know Indochine, this band sounds like The Cure. Great album, excellent contributors. The old fans of Indochine will not be disappointed. Nicolas Sirkis and his bandmates were able to reinvent Indochine.
