5.0 out of 5 stars Falling Under the Spell..., August 5, 2002
By
This review is from: Paradox Addendum (Audio CD)
After hearing "The Cruxshadows" at my local dance club, I could not rest until I heard more. On vacation in New Orleans I found this CD at Tower Records and from the first time I placed it in my cd player I had a new favorite band. Not since the 1980's has a "goth" band belted out such beautiful poetry. Not only does Rogue so powerfully recite Edgar Allen Poe's Annabel Lee that one might feel that the spirit of Rogue and E.A. Poe may have crossed paths some where along the way, but the multi-talented vocalist has taken his own, sometimes heart wrenching but always captivating, poetry and transformed it into song.

Songs such as "Ave Maria" paint a portrait that displays the beauty, but also the empathetic essence, of what Gothic music should be. Such is also true of "Heavens Gaze"--a must have for anyone who truly loves the spirit of Goth. Anyone who listens to this song will fall under the magic spell of Rogue's voice as he sings of the gods and angels, it seems as though he may be leading the modern gothic generation in a high powered sermon that assures us there is beauty in all things... even sadness.

Rogue's frequent reference to Angels in "Ave Maria" and "Heavens Gaze", as well as many of his other songs, leaves you with a reassurance only reverand Rogue can produce. Join me and fall under the spell of the magical voice and lyrics of The Cruxshadows and the angel whose folded black wings inspired him to tell the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is full of greatness!, February 1, 2004

Every song on this cd is amazing. Cruelty was the first Cruxshadows song I've ever heard and I still absolutely adore it. Ave Maria has become one of my most favorite songs, as has Love/Tragedy. I was lucky enough to watch Rogue do Annabell Lee in concert and it was one of the most powerful things I've ever seen. I love the poem, yes, but Rogue's voice and charisma take it to another level. You have to see this band live!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, January 22, 2004

Every single track on this album is absolutely amazing! I love in particular "Eurydice", and "Love/Tragedy". And what I wouldn't give for Edgar Allan Poe to come alive just for a moment, just so he could hear Rogue reciting "Annabel Lee". I believe that it is exactly how he would want it to sound.

Any die-hard Cruxshadows fan will apreciate this remix/new album. Only 3 of the beautiful 7 tracks are remixes, and well done ones at that. Each remix captures the song at a new angle, throwing you into a different light. The other songs tell stories of love and misfortune through the usual stunning violin work and Rogue's gorgeous voice, though nothing is stale sounding. Plus, it comes with a Cruelty video! What else do you need?

4.0 out of 5 stars One of their best yet!, November 1, 2000
This review is from: Paradox Addendum (Audio CD)
This is an amazing album from an amazing group of artists. I like this album alot, but it doesn't earn a full 5 starts from me. Why, you ask? I'm not a huge fan of the remixes, escpecially the Cruelty remix. The first 30 seconds sound like a remix, and the rest of the song sounds exactly the same as the origional Cruelty. The rest of the remixes are fine, i'm not a huge remix fan though. The new songs are great, and the spoken work track, Annabel Lee, is a wonderful reworking of the classic Poe poem. I highly recommend this for any Cruxshadows fan, as well as any darkwave/goth/snythpop fan. Check it out, its worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, December 18, 2003

I absolutely love this band. I had never heard about them and didn't really think I'd enjoy them, but I saw them at Dragon*Con in Atlanta two years ago. Wow! So far I've been to three concerts and have two CDs. This one was my first because I wanted Eurydice and Annabel Lee. I listened to it walking to class almost exclusively this semester. That is until I got "Frozen Embers." My wishlist is almost entirely CXS this Christmas.
They are absolutely phenomenal. If you don't think it's quite your thing, go to a concert of theirs. I guarantee you their stage (or lack thereof) performance will win you over.

4.0 out of 5 stars There is no better band than the Cruxshadows, September 8, 2001

Paradox Addendom is one of the better cd's by the Cruxshadows it's not the greatest but I still love it. The greatest part of the cd is the music video, on there it's so awesome. The only bad part about it is that there is only 7 song and 3 remakes but some of those songs are good to, the Heaven's Gaze (Bitter Tears Mix I) is the best version of that song, and the Cruelty (Cruel Night Version) is better to. Ave Maria is one of my personal favorite songs. This song is so up paste and moving and it's fun to dance to. The most moving thing on the cd is the Annabel Lee (Spoken). This is the best mythology story and the violin in the background just adds so much power. Anyway the cruxshadows mean so much to me there the greatest band in the world and there so moving. The only reason I gave this cd 4 stars is to the lack of variations in tracks every thing else about it is Kick A$$ well thanks for reading this but if you want the best cd from Cruxshadows get Mystery of a Whisper.

Well Bu Bye

Keith

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!, September 8, 2001

The "Paradox Addendum" EP is a good introduction album to a new Cruxshadows fan. It gives you the opportunity to hear and see what they are about, through both music and a video. I have been a fan of the Cruxshadows long before this album was released, but this is definetly one of my favs. Words cannot explain the awesome video contained on the CD. Cruxshadows videos are hard to come by, it gives you the chance to view their creativity and devotion towards their career as an artist. The CD contains a mix of some old and new tracks. My favorite song off of this EP is "Ave Maria," it is a new track from the band and it's a step in the right direction for them. The haunting violins contained throughout the song soothes you and Rogue's voice will make you fall in love with the band immediately. The most disappointing track on the CD is the OB1 House Gazing remix of "Heaven's Gaze." It is boring, I skip past it everytime. It sounds as if no effort was put into this song. Basically, filler on the cd. I would of have given this album five stars if the track was not on the CD. Overall, if you are a Cruxshadows fan or if someone has recommended them to you, this is the CD you need to buy. It's a great price and worth every penny. Just to look at the pictures of Rogue is worth it! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars the melodic side of goth, October 6, 2005

For those seeking a pretty goth album with intelligent lyrics, the cruxshadows are a good bet. This is a softer more EBM side of goth rock, with some beautiful violin work, and easy to sing along to. Rogue (the lead singer) is fabulous in concert. This album in particular has a variety of good songs which are enjoyable immediately but have many layers of sound and meaning as well. Eurydice will get stuck in your head, and cruelty is the perfect "belting out lyrics you would say to your X" song. The cruxshadows are on easily one of my favorite bands, and I would reccomend them to anyone interested in melodic goth rock.
