THE PUZZLE OF PATIENT 815A

A beautiful young woman with amnesia lies in Ward 8 of Ellis Hospital, remembering nothing about where she was driving when her car plunged over a cliff--or the identity of the dead child in the backseat. Naming the anonymous patient Mathilde, Nurse Adele Monsarrat calls on her psychiatrist ex-lover to help the crash victim recover her shadowed past.

Yet someone is determined to keep Mathilde silenced as a threatening presence infiltrates the dark hospital halls--while outside in the community, four people are brutally murdered in what appear to be professional hits. Then the police uncover disturbing connections between the victims--and Mathilde--forcing Adele into a hot zone of terror, where ruthless violence spreads like a disease no doctor can cure. . . .

3.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read, January 6, 1999
This review is from: Paradox (Mass Market Paperback)
Interesting and likeable characters (especially Nelson the dog), and consistent, even writing make this an easy and fast read. The plot itself was a little thin in places but the surprising resolution pulled it all together.

2.0 out of 5 stars The reality is...nursing is not that bad!, June 14, 2000
This review is from: Paradox (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read Ms. Heron's books over the years and have enjoyed many. However, I tire of the constant portrayal of nursing as a powerless, whining group of co-dependant ninnies. This novel only supports these beliefs. I have been a nurse for 15 years and now practice as a nurse practitioner in San Francisco...and I love what I do. It's time to portray non-bitter nurses effecting change as needed, which I assure you is entirely possible. Also, I noted homophobia in Ms. Heron's book MERCY and was bothered. I chose to purchase another "Mystery" by this author and was again struck by the overt and covert homophobic remarks. I am quite surprised given Ms. Heron's listed place of residence. I must say that I need to do some thinking before I purchase another selection by this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars If this is her best, don't show me her worst, January 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Paradox (Mass Market Paperback)
Nurse Adele is probably the most perfect person I've ever heard of. She's beautiful, an excellent vegetarian cook, loves animals, athletic, can find anything, can see in the dark, a fantastic nurse. By the time I was 1/3 of the way through the book I had to force myself not to throw it against the wall at least twice because of this *perfect* person.

I wanted to read a mystery. Instead I found an homage to Nurse Adele. Her only flaw seems to be that she's slow to let a man know she's interested. She doesn't throw herself at men. Oh wait, that's a plus as well. I take it back, she's not flawed at all. She's the most perfect person you'll ever find. She made me want to throw up.
