Book Description

December 1999
We struggle to make sense of life and its everyday occurrences when, in actuality, it cannot be explained. Yet many find comfort in accepting a definite explanation for existence.

The word "paradox" generally means the acceptance of seemingly contradictory conclusions. Using paradox, Tristam Lass explores the concept of living peacefully by accepting the obscure quality of existence and embracing the fleeting and enigmatic essence of truth.

Find your footing in the world and clarify its meaning through Lass's ideas, supported by philosophers dating as far back as 500 B.C. yet clear and understandable to the general reader.

This review is from: Paradox: Introduction to a New Approach Towards Philosophical (Paperback)
Enclosed within the 90 or so pages of Tristam Lass' Paradox: Introduction to a New Approach Towards Philosophical Investigation is a concise, elegant and yet seething distillation of the state of modern philosophy and the implications of its practice. Mr. Lass' central hypothesis is simply stated but forgotten in the world of academic micro-dissection: that the search for absolute philosophical and moral certainties leads to a collective cognitive dissonance, sociopathy, and destructive dogmatism. It is only through the acceptance of limitations and what is described as the universal, irrevocable paradox - the acceptance of apparent, irreconcilable opposites - will philosophy as a field be able to continue to have a viable role in modern times. Using a diverse bibliography that includes ancient Chinese wisdom to the annals of European history Mr. Lass directs the reader to the only accessible certainty after millenia of philosophical investigation: the only absolute truth in the pursuit of wisdom is the acceptance of the paradox. The message is lucid and the text and central themes are appropriate for anyone with an open mind(e.g., this is not a book exclusively for academicians). Placed within the context of what will hopefully be an extensive body of work by Mr. Lass, Paradox will undoubtedly be viewed as a seminal work in the study of thought.
