Book Description

December 6, 1990
Paragon Place is a close-knit community that has pretty well survived the Blitz. There is Sally Brady, who is torn between two men, local drunk Alf Porter, the prim Carey sisters, the gossips and the villains. All are drawn together in laughter, tears, rationing, flying bombs and poverty.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Paragon Place is a square near the docks in World War II London. The Catholic Church leases the eight residences to a diverse group of tenants: Sally Brady, who has returned to her parents' home after her husband's adultery; Vera, who just likes to have fun; the spinsters who live above the prostitute; the two women at war with each other; the widower, worried about his two soldier sons, who is seduced by his neighbor; and the local drunk. As Sally says, "I sometimes fink it's more like a big family than jus' neighbours in this little square." Since it is written in dialect and idiom, American readers may find the book difficult to read. The use of "f" and "v" for "th" is particularly troublesome. And what does "spifflicate" mean? Still, fun for those who like British historicals and aren't put off by dialect.
