Good Way to Teach the Basics of Writing,
By toothius (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paragraph Writing (Paperback)
I bought this book to help my students stay focused on one subject at a time. I always have students who can write pages of run-on sentences, but can't write a paragraph. This book provides a nice way to learn about topic sentences and supporting details. It also has a lot of writing forms that give students hints about what to write (e.g., describe how the food tastes). This book has given my class a common language that's helped writing across the curricula. I do wish that it provided more lines for each writing form, but it's easy enough to give them extra paper. Gret for unfocused students,
By WeeBeaks (California) - See all my reviews

I am homeschooling my 3rd grader, who has ADHD. I have found that this book is perfect for him in that it breaks paragraph writing into simple, clearly illustrated steps. For example, the first pages describe an overall paragraph, topic and supporting sentences. Then, there are several example paragraphs to work through with the student finding the topic sentence. From there, he learns to write topic sentences, and so forth. Even a highly distractable student is able to complete the simple short lessons, with good comprehension.

I love this book. It is a simple, easy-to-follow workbook for both teacher and student. It simplifies ways to write well-structured, interesting paragraphs about any topic. Good, solid instruction. Evan-Moore has done it again!

excellent for homeschooling,

I am a homeschooling mom of a 2nd grader, 3rd grader and 6th grader. I am really looking forward to applying this book to my children's weekly studies. I was looking for a book to build their writing skills, as I have noticed that they weren't as strong in their paragraph writing as I'd like for them to be. I think this book will even make ME a better paragraph writer because it has a very user-friendly, logical setup. It covers each skill in writing great paragraphs... topic sentences, supporting details, brainstorming, etc. I would not put too much stock in the age/grade level because I think this would even be excellent remedial help for students who are weak or don't seem to "get" writing paragraphs. I think this is an excellent foundation builder for writing skills!

I got this to work with my 8 yr old son who loves math and reading but thinks writing is a chore. I've tried other writing aids and he seems to think the topics were boring. This one he's taken to much better. It has simple and clear instructions about structuring a paragraph, introduces to different types of paragraphs and has enough practice to get the concept. I'm not a teacher so I don't use the overhead transparancy and I wish I had more pages of drill rather than paying for clear plastic pages. But I'm happy with the quality and results. My son is less resistant to writing and he has a little more informed approach to writing a paragraph.

In my opinion, Evan More workbooks are very helpful in supplementing your child's education. This particular book on how to write a paragraph, has proven to be very helpful in teaching my 3 grader how to organzie and write a paragraph. It teaches your child by steps, practice and implementation. It has served as a nice exercise book for writing instruction. There are better out there though, but this does get the job done.
