Book Description

PARAGRAPHS AND ESSAYS is the higher-level companion to SENTENCES, PARAGRAPHS, AND BEYOND in the popular two-book Brandon series. Written in an informal, engaging tone, this easy-to-use text takes students through all the stages of the writing process as they transition from simple to complex writing assignments. Sample student paragraphs and essays with stages exemplify the patterns of writing, while clear reading instruction offers students the opportunity to analyze readings and to practice the reading-based writing required in academic environments. Students master common writing patterns while learning to use textbooks as a springboard for their own writing in the form of summary, reaction, or response. Seventy-one high-interest, distinctive readings are integrated throughout the Eleventh Edition for analysis and as models of good writing. Clear, explicit writing prompts support each reading and focus on reading-based, cross-curricular, career-related, and general topics. In addition, the photo/art program promotes critical thinking, lively discussion, and analytical writing. The text is flexible in its format, allowing instructors to begin at any stage of instruction and to emphasize the paragraph or the essay, or to mix assignments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Has excellent readings for all the rhetorical methods, and each rhetorical mode is developed well. The grammar section of the text is by far one of the most comprehensive sections, yet seems to be easily understood by most students. Paragraphs and Essays fulfills the goals and objectives to get to the next level without frightening the students."

"Has a greater variety of examples and types of topics than other texts I've used. I like the progression from reading the variety of professionally and student-written examples to the variety of topics for assignments."

"I think the reading-centered writing is very useful in providing form and techniques for the students. This approach helps the students create an awareness of using models of writing and putting their own style (voice) into a particular form. I believe that providing clear forms and models gives our students something concrete to build on."

4.0 out of 5 stars Felt like English for kids April 17, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book was in condition, it had writing in it, but not too much. The book itself explains English as if you are still in the sixth grade. It is jammed with fill in the blank and other activities. A bit boring, but a good refresher class.
