Accordian player Gabriel Gomes first heard the silken voice of Teresa Salgueiro as she sang at a café table among friends in 1986. Gomes, along with fellow Madredeus musicians, was searching for a singer and Salgueiro's pensive, crystal voice did the trick. Madredeus, a quintet of Portuguese musicians, take their name from their former rehearsal space, a convent whose abbreviated moniker translates loosely as "Mother God" or "Holy Mother." And though the material on O Paraiso is not religious, the spirit in which Madredeus make their music is full of reverence and deep affection. The strings are water, the voice is wind.
