Wow!,

I totally agree with John Bach's review (see above). I did fall in love only by hearing a voice. The first song is mesmerizing. You can feel the pathos and longing. It took me a long time to find an English translation to the lyrice for that song. "No matter how, i am here No matter how, i'll be waiting for you. Come back with the wind, my love Come back soon, please. Long ago i forgot why i stood away from you, and every moment seems to be the worst. No matter how, i'll be waiting for you.." (Haja O Que Houver) Wait until you hear her voice. Buy this CD. It will be your favorite. Don

I was introduced to this music by a friend of mine and wasn't sure I'd really like it, but when she began the music for me I just didn't know I could feel so uplifted by music. Teresa's voice is mesmerizing and a pure joy to listen to. This is one of their greatest collections. Although Andorinha da Primavera is my all-time favorite for personal reasons, the entire CD is great to listen to and find your own little private spot in your mind.

A blessing for the soul, song as redemption,

This album proves one can fall in love by hearing a voice alone. This was the first Madredeus album I encountered and is still my favorite. It usually does one of two things to me whenever I listen to it; either I get weepy because I feel it touches the poignancy of life, or it makes me feel all the joy and beauty there is in the world. Madredeus has truly helped me through a lot of rough emotional times. Thank you.

A pause to catch your breath back,

In my oppinion, this is the less accomplished album of the group's recent history. There were changes with the members ( both accordeonist Gabriel Gomes and keyboard player Rodrigo Lećo left to start their own projects ) and the substitutes ( Carlos Maria Trindade on Keyboards and Fernando Júdice on bass guitar ) were not able to maintain the "Madredeus sound" at the same standards, not because of the quality of their playing, but maybe for a certain lack, due to their recent arrival, to get in the spirit of the group's personality. Anyway, it is still a very good album, more introspective and mature than its predecessors maybe, but not certainly one to discard. If you're a newcomer, do not start with these one. If you have the others, this is a variation, but certainly not an unwelcome one.

I've grown to love the beautiful music from my mother's homeland, "fado". This album by the group Madredeus is beautiful! The music is haunting and strange, while being very soothing. I understand and speak Portuguese, but everyone will get this. "O Paraiso" means "the paradise", this album surely lives up to it's title, enjoy!!!

This whole album can be most aptly described as brilliant. Although the musical line-up is relatively simple, the music is amazingly rich and sophisticated in melodic content. There are almost no weak moments and each and every bit of the songs have timeless and uplifting aura that encapsulates you from the very beginning. The vocals by Teresa Salgueiro is a seminal example of how poetic lyrics can transcend beyond their inherent rendition. Along with flawless orchestration which overcomes the intricacies of merging strong instrumental content with female vocal, Madredeus excels in conveying the melanchonic mood of Portugal even for those who don`t speak Portugese. The overall effect is, however, universal and ethereal...

I don't understand...,

...a word of what they are saying.
What I do understand is, for me, this newly discovered sound called fado. This is a mesmerizing tranquil cd that is pure spiritualism. This is some of the finest acoustic guitar ensembles I have heard in quite some time. The angelic voice, haunting at times, is one that enters your viscera. I started out with one cd, then two, now I must have all of Maderdeus' work. It makes me want to go to Lisbon just to see if there is more of this lurking in the out-of-the-way back alley clubs. I made the mistake of ordering two of these cd's at the same time. I was going to send one back. But after my wife heard this incredible music she snatched it up and put it in her vehicle. This music is not for everyone. It is only for one person...you. Enter fado. Enjoy.

Fado with a lilt,

Lush and lovely, Teresa Salguiero's voice floats over the guitars and tasteful synthesizer of her comrades. Many of the lyrics are just as lovely. A more elegant undertaking than earlier works.

No matter which Madredeus record you get, be sure you've invested instead of spending money. What you get out of any work by this portuguese group is interior peace, beauty, simplicity. No matter if you understand portuguese, the music and Teresa Salgueiro's voice are so ravishingly beautiful that you'll fall in trance after listening for a while. By the way, Miss Salgueiro has just visited Chile promoting her second solo record, offering a one-night performance on June 5: it's become one of the finest recitals I've ever attended in my life. "O Paraiso" is one of the many excellent recordings by Madredeus. Don't hesitate one second and get it NOW.

You don't need to speak Portuguese to appreciate the voice of Teresa Salqueiro and the beautiful guitars beside her. I am spellbound each time I hear her sing.
