Healthy food for parakeets, April 5, 2008

We've had parakeets for several years, and they have thrived on Daily Diet. Some of our friends say their birds will only eat seed. It's true that parakeets would rather eat seed, but Daily Diet is a better balance for them, and they eat it happily if they get it all the time, and occasionally get seeds as treats.
As they eat the pellets, they crack them into a powder, and about half the powder falls out of their beaks into their food dishes (or onto the floor). Once the pellets are all gone, they eat the powder. Don't put so much in the dish that they end up with a big pile of powder -- they sometimes soil their food dishes, and you have to throw away the powder if they leave droppings in it.
It's best to check their food three times a day, and gauge the amount of food so there's not much left each time you check it. That minimizes waste.
This food costs more than seed mixtures, but it's better for the birds.
