5.0 out of 5 stars Parakeets, by: Annette Wolter, the A+ parakeet factbook, June 10, 2001

This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
This book is the ultimate book for soon-to-be or already parakeet owners. It holds more information on parakeets than I imagined. I am a soon-to-be parakeet owner who was looking for a good book on parakeet care and training. I found this book and immediately knew that I'd have to buy it for further reference! This book holds information on: hand and trust training, tips for purchasing a parakeet, states what you'll need for your parakeet, information on toys, prevention of diseases and boredom, and much much more! I cannot even begin to describe the whole book. Annette Wolter refers to her life experiences with her parakeets that helped me to understand better what to expect from parakeets. This book DEFINITELY deserves MORE than 5 stars! Looking for a REALLY good parakeet owner's manual? This IS the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bird Book/Parakeet, July 16, 2000
By
This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
I first got this book at the library, wanting a parakeet for my birthday. When I decided I wanted one I purchased the book. It has been very helpful. It has questions to ask yourself if a bird is right for you, ways to pick a bird, how to take care of a bird, how to tame, how to speech-train, what their diet is, lifespan of a parakeet, and much, much more.

I have now had my bird for a month and I can still use the book and I will be able to use the book for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars There's a better book for a similar price..., February 25, 2004
This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
Unfortunately, Barron's has a tendency to publish same-subject books in both this series and in their top-of-the-line "Handbook" series, and the topic of Parakeets is no exception. They have, in fact, printed two books on Parakeets in this series (one about Budgies, which are the same species) and a Parakeet Handbook (which is co-authored by both of the writers involved in this series' books).

Annette Wolter's style is one that is easy-to-read, but it is still quite informative. Had I not read "The Parakeet Handbook" first, I would have learned much from this book. However, as it is reasonably priced, well-written and informative, I can recommend it with few reservations.

3.0 out of 5 stars An educational manual, December 20, 2004
This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
Authored by Annette Wolter, this manual on parakeets was published in 1999. There are 87 pages. Eight chapters are contained. Numerous color photos and black-and-white drawings are provided. Also, an index is included. The anecdotes the author supplies are informative. Examples of topics covered are tips on purchasing, bathing, care, toys, diet, health, breeding, cages, taming, teaching the parakeet how to talk, intelligence, and behavior. I find the chapter focusing on behavior to be instructive and fascinating. In addition, two tables are displayed; one deals with dangers to the parakeet, while the other deals with health problems. The color photos of the parakeets are pleasing. As for the black-and-white drawings, they are impressive and educational. I recommend this manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a Complete Manual for Beginners, January 27, 2009
This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
When we rescued an escaped Parakeet from certain death (she'd spent several nights in sub-zero temps) we knew that we could not keep her. We have 7 cats! My husband's parents agreed to keep her, but knew only about caring for cockatiels. Since they are in their 80's, we wanted to make certain that they knew the ins and outs of parakeet care. This book, while short, is packed full of all the information you may need to know about parakeet care - from the basics of feeding and cage care, to breeding and creating your own flock. It is obvious that the author is quite smitten by parakeets, and tends to refer to them at times almost as if they are people. Yes, each and every animal has their own personality and endearing charms, and birds are certainly in this category. What we found most interesting was her insight into the flock mentality, and how important it is to either BE the bird's flock, or have more than one bird. To leave a parakeet alone for many hours during the day, with contact from no one, is to condemn the bird to misery. Once reading this, we ran out and bought our rescued bird a mate. Since introducing them to each other, they are inseparable. Our parents read the book thoroughly, and changed or adapted the cage, the feeding and the socializing of their birds accordingly. Since they don't care to allow the birds to fly through the house, finger taming isn't going well! The book recommends that all parakeets be allowed to fly and to explore their environments. The book gives exact instructions for "bird-proofing" the home so that the naturally curious birds do not fall into things, eat things, or generally hurt themselves. The author has thought of everything. We highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of having parakeets.

2.0 out of 5 stars informative but not complete, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Parakeets (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
Some of the information is great, but it still left me with questions. So the title "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" is misleading.
It does have good information on diet and health and exercise.
But it seems like an overview. But I was looking for more than an overview. The title should be "Parakeets, an overview for the new owner" More details please!
