Addendum, August 14, 2014 --- There are now a large number of robot kits out there that are comparable to the BOE Bot but are built on the Arduino platform instead of the Basic Stamp. In fact Parallax now sells an Arduino version of the BOE. In many cases, these are cheaper kits and probably the future of robotics is going to be built on a foundation of Atmel chips (at the heart of Arduino) and the C++ programming language. However good programmers learn more than just one computer language (5-7 more, at least) and there is nothing in the BOE-BASIC computer language that will "damage" a programmer who eventually wants to be proficient in multiple language. Furthermore, the Parallax books are outstanding and there are few titles in Arduino land that can match the detail and depth of the Parallax, and the parallax accessories are perfectly adapted to this kid. I would still recommend the BOE Bot for kids who want to learn a lot more about programming in general and robotics in particular.

Original review follows.

I am slowly working my way into the Arduino, but I wanted something that would get me moving a bit faster with micro-controller projects, allow me to do some data logging, and create some kinetic, technical gizmos for my classroom. I was introduced to the BOE BOT by a colleague several months ago and obtained the loan of one. I spent several highly productive weeks learning how to blink lights, drive servos, and read sensors and while I feel that I will eventually move beyond the BOE-BOT and the BasicStamp micro controller, I feel that it is an excellent jumping off point, especially for beginners that do not have easy access to a group of experienced fellow enthusiasts.

I got one of these robot kits for my 10 year old and he simply loves it. As a family of home schoolers, I'm always looking for things that will teach as well as entertain my kids and this robot more than fills that need. My son will sit for hours working on programs and then have hours of fun showing us what he accomplished. I HIGHLY recommend the boe bot to anyone who is interested in robotics.

This little robot was exactly what I was looking for. I purchased it for my daughter who has aspirations of being a hardware engineer when she grows up. She is currently working her way through the manual and is enjoying every moment. It has exposed her to component assembly and simple programming and is giving her a foundation on which to grow.

This robot is easily the best robot to start out programming, electronic hardware, and the fundamentals of robotics. I started off with this robot and it is easily the best product I bought for the beginning of my career interests. I know I always wanted to graduate with either computer science or electronic engineering and this product proved that. This comes with a breadboard that you can rearrange in your choice (although the book goes step-by-step) and the programming software is called PBASIC programming. Or pseudo basic. There are many opportunities of way cool programs and the company, Parallax, sells many additional kits for your Boe-Bot. For example, the tread kit, gripper kit, crawler kit, different types of sensors, HID's and many more. It is definitely an odd type of programming but if this is your first programming "language", it will be just fine. I have been working on this for hours and had a lot of fun doing it. If you are interested in robotics and want to start to learn, it this product is the best and is just right for beginners!!

I bought this for a college class that I am starting today, and I already started doing the exercises in the book that came with it. It works really well, and the instructions are easy to understand in the book. I also like it that it costs less money than the version that is sold at my campus bookstore.
