A Collection of Well-Crafted, Memorable Pop Tunes,

Most who know James Huggins (likely not very many do) know him as Of Montreal's long-time drummer. Recently, at the insistence of Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes, he has begun displaying his talents as a songwriter through the solo-project vehicle he calls James Husband. At an Of Montreal gig I attended earlier this year, "James Husband" and his backing band - contributions came mostly from others in the Of Montreal gang - acted as support. Upon seeing him, I knew nothing about his work as a solo artist, but I was quite impressed with his set. After said performance, I asked the friends I was with if he had a record out, and was misinformed that he did not.Last week, then, I stumbled upon his music video for the song "Window" and subsequently discovered and bought this album. It is most certainly a worthwhile purchase - it's an enjoyable collection of pop/rock songs that come across as really genuine and unpretentious: a rare quality in bands, even indie ones. Huggins has a smooth vocal delivery and employs riffs in several of the songs, which makes this record sort of atypical among Elephant 6 releases. Overall, this album is honestly one of the best released since the late 90's in my opinion, and I sincerely hope he'll make more music in the not-too-distant future. Stand-out tracks: "Elephant Alibi", "Window", "Little Thrills".
