PARALLEL, by Claudia Lefeve, is a refreshing book about the possibility of alternate universes and a girl who possesses a great power to affect them. Etta, an orphan, was tossed from foster home to foster home for as long as she can remember. In her final year as a minor Etta lives at the Dominion House for Girls. Her future is unclear but she will be free of the Social Services System. But when she meets Cooper Everett, her life is turned upside down. He takes her to another universe in which she never previously never existed. But as she enters it, a whole life is spun for her and its her job to live it, until her greater purpose is realized.

This book was one of the best alternate universe stories I've ever read. The explanation of paradoxes and how 'universe traveling' was never heavy and I didn't find any loopholes or questions that were unanswered. Lefeve's talent of world-building was showcased on each page and it really added to me liking the book as much as I do.

I found Etta a bit wise for her age but that all came with being an orphan. She had a mature outlook on life and she never really fit in with others her age. I loved watching her powers manifest and I am anxious to see what happens with those in the next book. I really liked the dynamic between Etta and Cooper. I didn't really understand his connection to her until the end and let me tell you it's a jaw dropper!

Overall, this was a great introduction to the Travelers series. I like the direction that Lefeve is going and I am excited for reading the rest of the series to find out more about Etta's gifts and her role in helping out her universe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review for Parallel February 20, 2012
Format:Paperback
I want to start out by thanking the author for contacting my blog Forbidden Passions Reviews for a review because I am so happy that I read this wonderful novel.

I loved the fast paced storyline that will keep you reading until the very end. I was so caught up in the novel that I did not even realize that I finished in one sitting. I think this first time author did a great job of creating a refreshing YA novel that is not like anything that I have read before. I want to give snaps to Claudia Lefeve for stepping out of the ordinary YA genre. Other then wishing that there had been more depth to the characters I was in love with them. I will have to admit that I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor after that ending, I did not see it coming.

I would recommend that this book be read and given a chance. Claudia did a great job with this book and I myself can not wait for the sequel so that I can see what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! October 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
What I like most about this story is the plot line. Ms. Lefeve did one heck of a job keeping me entertained but also keeping me at bay from answers till the end. She had me hooked and desperate! I have never wanted to finish a book so fast just to get to the end already! I loved that she kept the reader wrapped up in the mysteriousness of the book. Pieces of information were drop, only to find myself desperate for more.

The characters were also great! I loved that they grew right before the readers eye but not too much either. It left room for the characters to continue growing in the next book. The characters came to where they needed to be in order to go where they need to go next.

Now, the love interest. *sigh* This is what had me so desperate! I was dying towards the end of the book and was filled with absolute joy when I read the last sentence. Cause, I KNEW IT! Seriously Ms. Lefeve, you are brilliant. Nice ending.

This book did it job on not only capturing me, but now has me begging the author for the next book now please? I love the way everything is weaved together yet apart. Please take my word for it and read it.

It's rather boring. It's hard to get a feel on any of the main characters. They have no depth to them.

I was not surprised by the ending itself but rather some of the supporting details. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would love to read the follow up novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Parallel
Good character combinations. Supernatural abilities, like astral projection, a little too occult for comfort. Time travel was a more enjoyable fantasy than astral projection. Read more
